Is Hard Water Causing Your Dry Skin?

Many articles are written about products that contain harsh chemicals that dry the skin and millions of advertising dollars are spent on products that claim to do the opposite. However, one often overlooked dry skin factor is the hardness or softness of our water. Using natural products free of substances that cause dry skin is vital, but hard water will continue to exacerbate the problem.

Water that is 'hard' contains high amounts of calcium, magnesium and iron. When these minerals harden, they clog our household plumbing and make it more susceptible to developing lime deposits.

Hard water also has detrimental effects on the skin. Since it is difficult for any substance to dissolve in hard water, soap doesn't lather well, and doesn't rinse off completely. Residue from the water and the cleansing products clogs the pores, and causes flakey, itchy, dry skin.

Clinical studies conducted to determine the influence of water on the skin have also found that hard water irritates the facial skin and blood vessels. Study participants noted an increase in irritation, redness, and dry skin. The skin becomes thinner, and the irritated blood vessels cause flushing and rosacea. Once the water is softened the irritation is removed – the deposits are no longer left on the skin, cleansing products are easily rinsed off, and the blood vessels and skin tissue begin to thicken and heal.

Our environment is inundated with harmful chemicals that irritate the skin and cause other physical problems. Air pollution, environmental bacteria and fungi, dust and dust mites, pollen, household and personal cleaning products and cosmetics all contain harmful, irritating substances. Whatever you can do to eliminate them will help your dry skin, and your health.

Thousands of doctors are now recommending a shielding lotion to protect the skin against pollutants and harsh chemicals, including those in hard water, but softening your water will remove one more source of the problem. Soft water, and daily application of a shielding lotion to protect against the substances you can't control, could lead to improvement in your dry skin within just a few days, and, before long, you could have the healthy, dewy complexion you've always wanted.

Cleaning and Renewing Yellowed Automobile Headlight Lens Covers

Are your car's light covers yellowed, cloudy or scratched? You're not the only one. Unless you provide your car's clear headlamp lenses regular attention, in 24 months or less they can deteriorate to the point of being completely opaque, making it very hazardous to operate your automobile in the dark and in reduced visibility conditions. The fix is easier than you might think. The best thing is that you can remedy this hazardous and ugly issue in thirty minutes or less. It's simple once you learn how.

The Reason Headlights Turn Yellow and Dull?

The issue is not caused by abuse or neglect, as you might think. It is an environmental issue. Without regular maintenance, UV light from the sun, acid rain, salt and road debris damage and dull all clear plastics, including headlight covers. If your car has halogen or another type of high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights, the issue can be worse. These sealed beam units function at increased temperatures, further contributing to degradation and yellowing.

How Do You Fix The Problem?

The solution is a quick car detailing task that renews the finish. Headlamp restoration is a plastic restoration process that removes surface damage and returns a like-new finish to the lenses. Even hopeless-looking cases of yellowing, hazing, and scratches can be fixed in less than a half hour.

You might be asking yourself why repair instead of replace? Your headlamps are a single module, so you can't easily replace the outer cover. If you have an expensive car with high-performance lighting, replacement is expensive. Renewing versus replacement can save you $150 to $600 per lens, so it's well worth the effort. Besides, it's easy!

What level results can you expect? It may seem hopeless, but chances are the damage is superficial. Even if your headlights are completely opaque, they can be renewed. As long as the plastic has not yellowed all the way though, you have a very good chance of complete restoration.

Use A Gentle Plastic Polish First

If the damage is not severe, you may be able to resolve it with a simple plastic polish like Meguiar's PlastX. I recommend trying this solution before any other. It will not be wasted time or cost, either, because you should use the polish from time-to-time to maintain your lighting.

NOTE: Never use a household glass cleaning product like Windex on clear plastic. These cleaners contain ammonia, which causes clear plastic to yellow.

If the polish alone does not work, then you need to repair the damage with a very fine sand paper (2000 grit is very safe) and re-polish to restore a clear finish. While it may sound difficult or complicated, it's not. Wet sanding is fast and easy.

TIP: You can test to see if your headlamps will respond to hand polishing with a small dab of tartar control toothpaste. Toothpaste is slightly abrasive. If the small test area vastly improves, then you know polish alone may be all you require.

Sandpaper & Re-glazing Procedure

To restore the damage with wet sanding and re-glazing, you require the following supplies:

  1. Polishing towels

  2. Bucket of soapy water

  3. Latex gloves (if you have sensitive skin)

  4. Painter's masking tape (1" to 1.5" width is best)

  5. Plastic polish

  6. Wet/dry sand paper (600, 1200, 2000 grit)

  7. Sanding block (1" x 2" erasure works great)

  8. 2.5" Velcro backing plate for use with 3/8" drill or cordless drill

  9. 3" foam or wool polishing pad with Velcro backing

If you require a more in-depth guide, then have a look at my Guide to Detailing page on Restoring Plastic Headlight Lenses. Here's the procedure:

1: Clean the car light lenses. A bucket of soapy water works best. Clean the surrounding area, too. Dry thoroughly.

2: Use painter's masking tape to mask around the headlight. This will help protect your car's paint finish. This only takes a few minutes, so don't skip this critical step.

3: Wet sand each headlight. First determine the amount of damage to each lens. If your headlight lenses are scratched or if they are completely opaque, you will need to start with 600 grit sandpaper. Sand thoroughly, and then progress to1200, then 2000 grit.

If your lenses have no scratches and are only slightly yellowed, you can probably get away with using 2000 grit paper only. The first sanding step is where you will actually remove the scratched and cloudy layer of plastic. The finer grades of sandpaper are to remove the scratches left from the previous grit sandpaper.

As you sand, your sanding water will turn milky. This is the damaged layer being removed. Use plenty of water for lubrication and to keep the sandpaper clean. Keep sanding until the surface feels perfectly smooth. The drippings will become clearer as the damage is taken away. Dry thoroughly between sanding steps to inspect progress.

4: Re-glaze headlight lenses using plastic polish on a 3" polishing pad (foam or wool). First connect the Velcro backing plate adapter to your drill.

Apply several dabs of polish to the pad and start polishing the lens. As the polish starts to dissipate, add a bit more and continue polishing. Discontinue polishing at the point the lens is completely clear again. Finish with a final hand polish using a tiny bit of polish on a clean towel or applicator.

5: Wax to protect. Use a good car wax to reseal the plastic and protect from the elements.

6: Maintain monthly with a quality plastic cleaner/polish. The products I recommend most are Plexus and Meguiar's PlastX. If polished regularly, your car's headlight lenses will never need restoring again!

Why is office renovation important?

Some view office renovation work as a dreadful chore, some find it a financial burden. But the plain fact is that, for a business to grow, constant office renovation is essential and necessary to maintain such growth. Rather than treating it as a burden, office renovation work should be viewed as a sign of things to come. Actually, office renovations are worth celebrating because the need for refurbishing means your business has made enough progress to make the current style and layout obsolete. Once you have made the decision to start refurbishing your office space, you can start thinking about designs and layouts. Even with a tight budget, professional advice can go a long way to create a whole new office space.

The floor of your office represents the most used commodity of the entire vicinity, so naturally it suffers to most wear and tear. Even the best and most expensive carpeting and tiling would disintegrate over certain periods. When it comes to renovation works, it is definitely wise to replace the carpets and tiles to ensure a fresher and livelier atmosphere. Although it might cost a significant outlay, replacing the carpets is definitely worth it in the long run.

A fresh spray of paint or a wall sticker change can liven up your workplace. The surrounding walls can play a huge part in determining the ambience of your office. A change of colour is essential to follow changes in colour trends. Different parts of the office can be painted with different themes depending on the relevance of the work. Adorning the walls with art and décor can also make a huge impact on overall ambience.
Furniture can get outdated easily and office furniture is not exception. Daily use can result in typical wear and tear of office furniture. Fabrics can get ripped and stained. Should your renovation budget allow you to refurbish and replace all the furniture with a new set, then you should not hesitate in getting a new look for your office. However if you are on a tight budget, then a simple reupholstering of the fabric or mending of the furniture can come a long way in making a noticeable impact.

Your interior designer should also provide you with sound recommendations on your new office layout should any changes be necessary. There are countless ways to rearrange office furniture and appliances to create a cozier working environment. Partitions can also be put in place to divide different areas for separate purposes. By arranging cubicles and furniture economically, you can potentially save up on lots of unused space. Less space means less coverage, which would indirectly mean less maintenance costs. Unused spaces can be closed off as storage or partitioned off temporarily should the need to use it arise in the future.

Good interior design is recommended to create a harmonic and cohesive working environment. It is important to take note that it does not hurt to pay more for a more reputable renovation company with a respectable portfolio. Such companies usually have international recognition as they comply with ISO standards. These companies are reliable and responsible in the sense that they use quality materials for renovation at a reasonable price. They could also provide you with useful advice on how to refurbish your office for the benefit of your business. Good office renovation companies know what their customers want and they set their priorities into satisfying their customer’s demands. Maintaining good customer relations is important because you might never know when you need another renovation for your office.

Bringing Behavioral Health Into The Electronic Age

Mental health and addiction treatment providers today face a critical issue - how can they best manage information to improve patient care and safety while protecting patient rights and privacy. Behavioral health is part of the broader healthcare industry, which is in the midst of a massive transformation to better manage patient health information. This transformation has been occurring almost naturally because of advances in information technology and management. It promises an improved healthcare system that will hopefully put an end to the 44,000 to 98,000 patient deaths that occur annually due to preventable information related mistakes.

The federal government is participating in healthcare's information technology transformation. In 2004, President Bush issued Executive Order 13335 that called for the widespread adoption of information technology in healthcare and established the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) to help achieve this goal. To a service provider, the Electronic Health Record may sound like a software issue, but it is in fact a retooling of business practices affecting patient safety and quality of care.

How can behavioral health become part of healthcare's information technology transformation? Behavioral health providers must first decide on essential mental health and addictions treatment information for inclusion in a common EHR. This decision must resolve five key policy issues:

1. What unique behavioral health information must be incorporated into an EHR?
2. Should there be time limits on behavioral health information in the EHR - for instance, should a diagnosis of alcoholism be maintained 25 years after sobriety has been attained?
3. What opportunities exist for the behavioral health field to participate in the development of the EHR?
4. What role should behavioral health consumers and service providers play in actively managing behavioral health information and other data standards?
5. How should the EHR address privacy and confidentiality?

How is the behavioral healthcare faring so far in this transformation? Unfortunately, not very well. Information technology used in behavioral health generally supports only administrative reporting and is a far cry from fulfilling the potential to improve clinical decision-making and program planning.

To help behavioral health better react to this transformation, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment sponsored the Behavioral Health Treatment Standards Group (BHTS) in 2005. The mission of BHTS is to increase knowledge, understanding, and use of behavioral health data standards in addictions treatment and mental health. BHTS members include a mix of organizations representing addictions prevention and treatment, and mental health services as well as software vendors involved in developing EHRs for behavioral health providers.

BHTS is achieving results. One important result has been to get standards-setting organizations that are shaping the design of the technology and information infrastructure for EHRs (like Health Level Seven) to reflect the unique needs behavioral health patients and providers with regard to privacy and confidentiality. BHTS is also raising awareness and understanding within the public and private sector about the significant potential of EHRs in clinical services and administrative matters, especially for reporting to the multiple entities that fund behavioral health services. BHTS is now working to collect information about the cost of adopting such systems and to learn more about reporting requirements for behavioral health providers. This knowledge will be used to better shape the public effort to make behavioral health part of the transformation occurring in healthcare.

Safety During Asbestos Removal

Asbestos can be a very dangerous substance for animals and people alike; this means that if your home has any of it then it is important that it is removed as quickly and safely as possible. Asbestos was a very popular building material which was popular right up until the mid 80’s. This substance was ideally suited for building homes and offices as it was a very good insulator which was pliable and fire resistant.

If you do have any asbestos in your home then it is important that it is removed and replaced with another insulator. There are a number of insulators that you might consider using instead, including fibreglass. Of course it can be difficult to identify asbestos, especially when dealing with older buildings, so it is important to hire a professional.

As soon as the asbestos has been discovered it should be removed as soon as possible. It is also very important to do this safely so that there is not risk to the people removing it.

Normally the people dealing with asbestos removal will have training and certification allowing them to deal with the hazardous substance. Although it’s possible for you to remove it yourself, it’s not really a good idea. There are many contractors who specialise in asbestos removal including a1asbestosremoval; these ensure the safe removal of asbestos from your home without putting anyone’s health at risk. Asbestos related diseases can be fatal, which is why removing it safely is so important.

Removing the asbestos itself is a painstaking process; it is designed in a way to prevent breaking up the asbestos as much as possible. If it becomes broken up then it is the fine particles that are responsible for related medical conditions. Water is used to wet the fibres and prevent them from becoming airborne.

When the asbestos is removed it should then be stored in special containers, they will also be marked accordingly so that everyone knows the risks of the contents.

Throughout most of Australia the containers are then buried, as they are inside special canisters which are designed to contain the asbestos there is little risk of the substance leaking out into the environment or water table. If asbestos is not removed and disposed of properly then fines and even jail sentences are common.

Hiring a Professional

It is very important that a professional firm trained to remove asbestos is hired. By hiring a firm such as A1 Asbestos Removal you will ensure that the asbestos is removed carefully and properly. The asbestos will not be broken up which avoids the problem of the particles becoming lose in the air and resulting in potentially fatal health problems including asbestos related cancers. A1 Asbestos Removal can assist with asbestos removal throughout Australia.

You can learn more about the services on offer from a1 asbestos removal by visiting their website at http://www.a1asbestos.com.au, they offer removal services throughout Australia particularly in Brisbane and Queensland. Specialist equipment is used to ensure that any health risks are minimised as much as possible. The asbestos waste is also disposed of carefully and properly to ensure that there is no risk to the environment.

Context-Free Living ... Living Without Boundaries!

I know by now that you've heard the terms "Debt-Free Living", "Disease-Free Living", or an overabundance of other such coined terms for various marketing ploys to sell products and services. However, I'm not here to sell you anything, as what I'm offering, you already have! You just don't know it yet!

--- Context-Free ---

A "context" is a circumstance, point of reference, or a situation by which a particular view is aligned and a unique meaning is derived. Our personal contexts are those rules, belief systems, and cognitive maps that we've developed over our lives that provide us with a basis for making decisions, passing judgment, applying bias, filtering incoming information, and learning new ideas.

Immediately, it becomes apparent that living a "context-free" life is impossible. If we even attempted to do so, we would become mental vegetables! Information and sensory information would simply flow in and flop on the floors of our minds.

But, living with an overly complex contextual point of reference can have a similar affect. In such a case, information and sensory information are processed to the point of non-existence and we neither move forward or backward in our lives and learning. Instead, all data is "mashed" and "sliced" to fit neatly within the knowledge we already have simply to ensure a "safety context".

With complex contexts, regardless of how absurd or inaccurate our context is, the mind will devise any justification even if it uses a basis of other absurd or inaccurate information. It is our way to ensure that our "comfort zones" go unaffected.

--- Your Contextual References ---

We all have some point of reference that we use to analyze and store information that comes in through our physical senses and psi channels. These contexts come from parental voices, authority figures, experiences, trauma, and success. As we move through life, the context is usually altered to accept new information and understand how it is to be processed and managed.

However, many people's complex contextual references block and isolate the internal mind to the point of stifling and smothering the mental processes. The mind can then only reprocess the same information it has done so in the past. In the end, you derive the same answers to the same problems and end up back at the point you started.

--- Simplifying Your Context ---

On the extreme, over time, rules beget rules until, eventually, we have a complex data filtration system that kicks out anything that remote resembles some idea or information not completely in-line with our systems of belief. The human mind tends to develop such complexity to answer questions for which it is unsure. It creates a web of cross-connected information to prove that our lives and beliefs are justified.

This type of thought process leads to a stifling existence, little creativity, and a biased view of life as a whole. In the end, we end up with self-composed theories about how things are and should be and are unwilling to accept anything else. Eventually we can become embittered, angry, frustrated, envious, and prejudiced.

The most effective, yet difficult, way to manage such a situation is to simplify and eliminate those rules and beliefs that have no basis in your life. Why do you hate? Why do you feel a certain way about people or situations? That's a difficult way to approach the solution since we will always develop an answer based on our preconceived notions and complex rules of thought. Such preconceived notions of people and situations are merely ideas to protect our imbalanced mode of thought. This is where we need to start!

By identifying the notions that create the feelings, it is much easier to analyze. Reduce these rules down to the bare minimum and identify the foundation on which these rules are based. You might find that, as you meander through your own thought processes, that many of your ideas might be based on parental voices or misconceptions. Replace the parental voices with your own commands and expectations. Analyze and research your misconceptions to identify the realities behind the knowledge. Is it realistic to think this way or should you modify your belief systems to accommodate a new, realistic foundation?

--- Feedback and Processing ---

Once we're able to open our minds to new ways of thought and reduce our preconceived notions, we are then open to myriad new ideas and information that we never thought possible. Not only will we be able to accept and process new information, but we will be able to grow.

In reality, our brain is merely a processing portal for information. Put together, we are all but a massive distributed processing system. I remember that SETI had this distributed processing model for managing and processing vast amounts of data. It allowed computer users around the globe to download their software, which processed the plethora of data from their deep-space listening posts. The data was downloaded to the users' machines, processed, and sent back to the central site for consolidation and analysis.

The human brain takes in information through our senses and processes it based on the rules and cognitive maps we've created over the years. It then pushes the results back up into the Grid, the Universe, for storage and access --- our long-term, "collective" memory. The brain is not an isolated device and cannot live as such. It requires input and information exchange --- sensory and psi input is essential for healthy mental and physical processing.

--- What's next? ---

Intelligence is not what you know, but what you're able to do with what you learn. The ability to apply information successfully is a factor of one's ability to process information efficiently. The ability to process information efficiently comes with the ability to analyze results and adjust one's systems to intake the new information and use it productively. This is called "feedback". Such feedback comes from within and from our environment and is essential to growth as an individual and evolution as a species.

When we isolate our minds, and ourselves, through complex rules, we begin to create our own answers based on previous answers. Over time, we deceive ourselves about ourselves and the world around us. Stop the self-deceit and grow toward a fulfilling life! By simplifying your belief systems and being open to new information in new ways, you will drop the "excess baggage" that weighs you down and blurs your vision while gaining access a vast amount of information and resources that you never thought possible.

5 Frequent Safety and health Threats In The Work Area

The particular workplace has several hazards that require to become resolved. This is where risk assessment comes in. Company has the responsibility to ensure the security of the workers. Assessing the potential risks at work, formulating a sound safety policy, plus enhancing you and your employees' capacity to deal with these types of risks are just some of the means of ensuring defense against and avoidance of any unpleasant situations.

These are the 5 most common hazards we encounter while in the office and what can be done to prevent accidents along with other wrong doings.

1 . Confined areas - A limited space can be defined as a location or place of work which usually, -because from the building, location or even contents or the work activity therein, a hazardous gas, fumes, dust or fume or a good oxygen-deficient atmosphere might occur. : In occupations which usually require a individual to enter and exit an open or encapsulated tank, vat, sewer, pipe, utility vault, along with other similar improvements, extra treatment is needed.

A specially designed training course for workers to be more competent and modified to a confined working environment can significantly reduce any possibility of incidents by training the particular employees on access and working in these limited locations.

2 . Explosions plus fires - There are places of work, which as a result of the nature from the company, are more susceptible to explosions plus fires than additional working conditions. Therefore a fireplace safety Protocol is of paramount importance. Employer and employee must have adequate information on fire risks, fire avoidance and treatments.

There should be simple practical skills in fire protection. Fire security equipment, signs, and diagrams must be provided, as well as the undertaking of fireplace drills at work.

three or more. Noise administration - In factories where huge machineries are utilized within the produce, noise is usually but an ordinary feature of the place of work. However , the noise should not exceed the -exposure in order to noise levels that exceed a good eight-hour noise equal of 85 dB(A) or top at a lot more than a hundred and forty dB(C). -

A onetime too much exposure to noise can result to a temporary loss of listening to, change within hearing, or a ringing inside your ears (or tinnitus). However , if the contact with loud noises is continuous plus unavoidable, it could result in permanent hearing ringing, or even worse, hearing loss. Therefore , as much as possible, eliminate or tone straight down loud noises at work or even if the sound can be controlled, the organization must supply protective hearing armor and weapon upgrades to its employees.

four. Occupational Accidents - Every single day, a lot of workers are afflicted by traumatic accidents they acquired from their workplaces. Although, most of these are nonfatal, but some are serious enough the injury requires job move, various work restrictions, plus some time away from their job.

One of those occupational injuries can be musculoskeletal damage (MSI). Musculoskeletal damage is referred to as the particular -disorders of the bones, joints, structures, muscles, muscles and other soft cells of the entire body. : MSI usually benefits due to a prolonged repetitive, uncomfortable, or demanding postures and actions which will take its toll on the body.

5. Electrical hazards at work - Whether working with electricity (as an electrical contractor, electrical professional, line men and additional professionals) or simply a typical worker, the possibilities of electric hazards is not to become ignored. The down side is that the ordinary employee is unacquainted with the potential electrical risk present in environmental surroundings, unlike the professionals in whose specialty is electrical power.

They are only the most typical workplace risks. Each worker must be properly aware of the potential risks his/her work entails. Moreover, it does not take employer's obligation to make sure that the particular workplace is really as safe as is possible for that workers. An audio safety program must be in place to address the options of happening of these office hazards. With each other, employer and employee can come up with the required policies and processes.

Fire Blanket Safety in the Home

While many of those employed in the emergency services can see the importance of having a fire blanket in the home the same cannot be said for the general public. It is an unfortunate fact most people either ignore the dangers associated with home fires or they just do not realize the dangers that exist.

Most house fires start in the kitchen which accounts for almost 28 percent of all fires in the home. This is a very high number and most fires in the kitchen are caused by either a lack of concentration or because the person was interrupted by an unexpected occurrence. This could be something simple such as the telephone ringing, a caller at the door or maybe one of your children needs your immediate attention.

One of the main causes of fire in the kitchen is when dealing with very hot oil. If not monitored it can reach such high temperatures as to catch alight in an instant. When this happens instant panic will set-in as you try to find a very quick solution while under intense stress and trauma. Most people would dampen a towel under the tap and throw the soaking material over the flames. Smothering the fire does work because it starves the flames of the oxygen they need. But using a small towel to do it causes more danger.

Many people who have tried this method have the burn scars to prove it. The problem is that you feel you have to get very close to the fire to douse the flames. If you miss you may not get a second chance so you get as close as you can get. This is where the severe burning takes place. It may not be the actual flames that cause the skin damage, it could be just the intense heat. Other people have been burned because they may have missed the target and try to retrieve the cloth to try again. This time you may have a partly burning cloth to contend with as well as a fire that is on the verge of getting out of control.

Fire blankets are recommended by all the emergency services and people involved in health and safety. They immediately know the safety benefits that fire blankets can bring when used correctly. They should be made easily accessible near an exit doorway. Never hide them away in draws or cupboards and expect to find them easily when a fire takes hold. Placing them near to an exit ensures that you have away out should the fire blanket not be enough or if things go wrong.

Fire blankets are also ideal for covering someone who has actually caught fire and can also be worn over the head if you need to pass an area that is on fire or where extreme temperatures are causing difficulty. Protecting the vital organs is the most important factor when you are confronted with fire.

Fire blankets can be purchased in many DIY stores and hardware shops and the costs varies with the type and size you need. Many of the fire blankets can be reusable after washing though you will need to check the supporting documents for confirmation of this.

Every home should have a fire blanket located in the kitchen or where cooking takes place. When you consider the minimal cost to purchase one against the protection they provide for your home, your personal effects and of course your loved ones they will be one of the best investments you can ever make.

Some of the basic Safety Features a Car

The disorganized traffic in all towns and cities in India throw in a lot of challenges in driving. Hence, in India it is necessary that the driver's are extra careful while driving a car, lest they become entwined in a legal case. They could also end up being sufferers of reckless driving by other roads users.
Looking up at these possibilities, it is essential that the driver and passenger are fastened with seats belts. There is also the collapsible steering wheel, head restraints and emergency exit door that protects the passengers in case of any collision.

Collapsible Steering
The steering wheel is a compilation of a range of equipments; links and wheel which helps maneuver the car in the preferred route by the driver. The steering wheel is the only boundary among the car's energy and the driver who sets it in action. But the steering wheel can turn into a disaster in terms of event of a collision. The steering wheel can damage driver severely leading to death sometimes.
The car manufacturer developed the collapsible steering which absorbs the energy of the impact during frontal crashes. General Motors invented this concept first which was later adopted by Ford across all its muscle cars including Mustang. India, car manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra started fitting various kinds of collapsible steering wheel.
The collapsible steering column consists of steering wheel, steering shaft, an inner tube and column. A plastic wrapped perforated section joins the steering column in cab to the car machinery. In case of any accident, when the driver's body comes in contact with the steering wheel, the plastic wrapped perforated section collapses. The impact of the collision is absorbed by the steering wheel rather than transferring it to the driver playing safe for the divers.

Head restraints
The head restraints or head support were first seen in Maruti cars in India. Head restraints is very important features for comfort of any one both in times of accident and non-accident. During an accident- there is high possibility of neck jerking forward or backward at high speed resulting in fatal in most circumstances. It could permanently damage neck and upper spinal chord. This is termed 'whiplash injury'.
During any type of car accidents the most common damage is the neck injury. As known to every one, drivers body movement is matched with the motion of car. Whenever there is crash, the car seat speed up the forward movement of trunk. An unsupported neck will pause behind and this dissimilarity in motion leads to bend or stretch of neck, resulting in injuries. Higher the force of collision, results higher force of neck movement.
But when there is a head restraint it harmonizes with the seat motion supporting the neck.During non- accident times, head restraints provide support to neck on long drivers.

Seat belts
Seat belts play a very fundamental role in safety of a car passenger. Seat belts protect the occupant by holding them to seat in case of a collision.

However, if the vehicle was to suddenly stopped (due to collision), then the body of the occupant would still be in movement at the same speed and in the same path. The power of the accident united with the speed of the car would toss the occupants off their seats. However, if the person is fastened to a seat with belts, the occupant would remain on seat, thereby minimizing damages to body.

It is mandatory by law that occupants of front seats in car wear seat belts. Some luxury cars also provide rear seat belts.

Conclusion
Another key safety device is the airbag in car. But most car owners do not opt for this feature because of its high expense during installation. But reports prove that airbags safeguard car occupants from injuries in frontal collisions.

How Do I Get My CEUS Online?

It’s that time again: you need continuing education units (CEUS) to renew your professional license or credentials. Certification organizations, government licensing boards, and professional societies require continuing education (CE) for licensing. While some people plan carefully and attend courses, conferences, and seminars, others get caught behind. Such is the predicament facing nurses, marriage and family therapists, and social workers in need of continuing education every few years.

The International Association for Continuing Education and Training gives the following definition of a Continuing Education Unit:

• One (1) CEU is equal to ten (10) contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction.

• One contact hour is 50 consecutive clock minutes in a board-approved continuing education class or activity.

Instruction must come from a continuing education program recognized by the licensing board of your particular profession. Upon completion, your CEU records not only supply evidence to licensing boards of successfully passing the courses, but they also give employers information about your training.

Luckily, getting CEUS is easier than ever with the internet. Whether you’re an LCSW, an MFT, a nurse, or another professional in need of continuing education, there are a variety of CE offerings online. Online CEUS offer several advantages:

• Save time. You can complete CEUS online at your own pace. If your deadline is approaching quickly, you don’t have to wait for books, materials, or tests to be mailed back and forth. You can finish your online education in a matter of a few days, whereas through traditional mail could take up to 30 days. You also don’t have to wait for your conference or seminar to roll around and save commuting time.

• Gain Instant Access. After signing up, you get immediate access to reading materials and tests. You receive instant feedback on your test scores, and upon successful completion, you can print the course certificate from the comfort of home.

• Save Money. The online environment does not have the same overhead that conferences, seminars, and colleges do. Most online courses cost less than $10 per CEU. Compare that to hundreds of dollars you’d pay for CEUS at conferences or college courses.

Make sure your online CEUs will be accepted.

When considering online CEUS, verify that your course will count towards your CEU requirements. Requirements vary by state, so be sure to check with the professional licensing board over your jurisdiction. Save yourself the hassle: get an answer in writing before you start.

How To Choose The Best Furnace Filter

It may be difficult to imagine, but houses have lots of dust and selecting the best furnace filter is very important to air quality. Indoor air, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is two to five times more polluted than the outdoor air. But the reason most people are not aware about this is because microscopic size dust particles are present in the home - not visible to naked eye. Typically, they are suspended in the air due to their small size and the electrostatic charge that they carry. 99% of dust in the home is made up of the tiniest particles, and these are able to even by-pass the body’s system like the nose, and the windpipe. Even the body is designed to filter out only particles greater than 3-5 microns in size and keep them away from the lungs.

A typical house contains dust from pollen, spores, pet dander, lint, bacteria, etc. Even regular home activities like cooking or dusting add to the dust in the air inside the house. Such dust particles results in irritation of eyes and on entering the respiratory system, may cause respiratory disorders, damage to the lungs, or in unique cases, even cancer. For more information regarding furnace filters visit http://www.webproducts.com/Categories.bok?category=Furnace+Filters.

In order to keep the quality of the air inside the home healthy, good quality furnace filters for your furnace unit should be used. There are various types of filters available on the market. These can be disposable, reusable or refillable. They’re usually made from materials like fiberglass, metal, man-made or natural fibers. The efficiency of a filter is decided by fiber size, fiber density, airflow rate and particle diameter. Different types of filters available in the market are:

Panel Filter- These types of furnace filters commonly consist of 1” fiberglass filter installed in the ducts. However, these furnace filters are not very effective in removing dust from the air, as its primary function is protection of the internal fan and minimizing dust on the heating coil. These are a very basic filter and can trap only larger particles from the air.

Washable/Reusable Filters- These are meant for extended use, and with regular cleaning and maintenance serve a very long life. Their downside is that it is nearly impossible to get completely cleaned and therefore adds resistance to the airflow. These types of furnace filters are also not very effective in trapping very small particles.

Pleated Filters- These are a modified kind of panel filters that have pleats or folds to increase its surface area. This design change makes it more efficient at trapping dust particles due to increased surface area. However, here too, the furnace filter starts resisting airflow once it starts collecting dust particles and thus should be replaced regularly.

High Efficiency Pleated Filters- These filters have an additional component of electrostatic charge that is designed to capture extremely small particles and various allergens, which make-up 99% of the particulate composition of the air. However, even these should be changed at regular intervals to maintain the air quality, and the airflow. Alternatively, refillable furnace filters are also available in this type.

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters- These are extended filters that are able to remove sub-micron particles with high efficiency. HEPA filters have corrugated separators that have the core filters folded back and forth over it. This gives strength and also facilitates air passage between the pleats. However, these types of filters are not designed to fit most of the standard furnaces, as they require a separate system that includes a fan and a filter.

The actual filter that is suitable for your house depends on a lot of factors. First of all, it should be compatible with your furnace dimensions. If you live in a high pollution area, you should consider High Efficiency Pleated filters or HEPA filters. These are also recommended if any of the family members have allergies to any form of dust. For other regular purposes, Pleated filters should work fine most of the time. Care should be taken to maintain your furnace filters properly and change them when required. We spend a good part of the day in our homes, so it’s important to maintain healthy air inside our house.

Why Energy Saving For Kids Is Important

Energy conservation is a responsibility that belongs to everyone on the planet. We should all know why conserving energy is important and have concern for the amount of resources we consume that provide energy.

Remember that the cost of energy doesn't just affect your wallet. It affects the earth, too.

Instead of just thinking that saving energy is only an issue for adult's to contend with, it's time that people started training the next generation to take responsibility for energy and ecological conservation.

When it comes to energy-saving for kids, it's all about ensuring their future.

5 Reasons Energy-Saving for Kids is Important:

1. Every bit helps. Children need to understand that there is no act too small when it comes to conserving energy. In fact, they need to know that it is the cumulative effect of doing many small things that will have the biggest impact on saving household energy. This encourages kids by helping them realize that what they do to help save energy around the house does matter.

2. Turning off lights saves energy. This is one of those little saving electricity tips kids and adults alike can easily do that will go a long way toward conserving home energy. By simply turning off the lights when not needed, children can help reduce the average home utility bills significantly.

3. Walking can be fun. Energy-saving for kids, requires them being motivated in the right way. By showing children activities that they can enjoy while conserving energy, they will be more willing to accept adjustments to their routines.

Walking is an activity that a lot of children today consider drudgery instead of something to take pleasure in. Teaching kids that walking is something they can enjoy will encourage them not to rely on being driven everywhere by a motor vehicle.

4. Fun can be other than hi-tech. A lot of children entertain themselves by spending their days glued to an electronic gadget. What they don't know is that hi-tech gadgets waste a lot of energy.

Energy-saving for kids should involve teaching them how they can have fun without relying on gaming consoles and other electronic devices. Instead of playing baseball on a Nintendo Wii, why not get a ball and a bat and play the real game?

5. Alternative energy is exciting. When it comes to saving energy, kids will find the subject more appealing when explained in light of alternative energy sources and new technologies being developed to harness them. To a child, the fact sunlight is capable of being transformed into electricity is a fascinating concept.

The benefits of energy-saving for kids go far beyond their helping to lower the family energy bills and making a home energy efficient. Teaching children how and why conserving energy is important can also benefit their health, the environment and their future.

10 Video Game Safety Rules For Parents

Parents are always concerned about the well being of their offspring. Video games and the internet are good as well as bad. In order for gaming and the internet to be positive experiences you need to set rules that will protect your child and take certain steps to ensure your child is safe.

As a concerned parent:

1. Know the risks posed by video games and the internet. Even if a game is rated as safe on the box, very often, downloadable and alterations to the game online turn the game dangerous. Ratings are not based on alterations and download. So educate yourself everyday.

2. Use the US Department of Education’s Parents Guide to the Internet (http://www.ed.gov/pubs/parents/internet/index.html) and other websites like Child safety on the Information Highway.

3. Set down strict gaming and internet rules. Monitor the sites your child uses and learn how to use parental controls offered by Windows and other systems.

4. Play the video games yourself so that you have hands on experience.

5. Allow the children to play video games with only known players. If you are unsure of what kids may be doing at a friend’s house, drop in unexpectedly and check on them.

6. Gaming consoles like Xbox 360 have settings parents can use to protect their kids. Read about these at the Xbox 360 website. Read the Xbox code of conduct http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/codeofconduct.htm .

7. Ensure that the kids understand they must never reveal personal information on the internet and that they must use “dummy” identities for play. Sit down with the kids and create fun ids for them.

8. Ensure that the kids do not use live chats or forums online. This would of course depend on how old the children are. Befriend your child/children so that they will come to you when they encounter strange happenings or foul language. Win the trust of the children.

9. Be in touch with other parents and exchange information on video games. Networking works well and several PTAs even have websites that give tips on video gaming.

10. Play time according to child development specialists must be a reward and not a right. Set down the video gaming time say 30 mins thrice a week or everyday depending on your personal choices. Do not permit gaming to be an addiction or obsession. If you notice any behavioral changes and you feel its gaming seek expert advice/help.

The responsibilities of parenting are constantly changing and are more demanding with developments in technology. Parents need to stay young and have a fingertip on developments in gaming, online activities, child safety and more.

Emotional Distress Caused by Workplace Bullies

Emotional distress claims at workplace are usually caused by workplace bullying by a superior or a co-employee.

The emotional distress could be caused by actions by an individual or a group and workplace bullying can take on different forms.

Workplace bullying can be verbal, non-verbal, psychological, physical abuse or threats of physical abuse. Sometimes bullying can come in the form of passive-aggressive behavior as well.

To define workplace bullying, it refers to the tendency of an individual or a group of individuals to commit persistent and consistent aggressive or unreasonable behavior against a fellow employee.

It is usually difficult for victims of emotional distress to take action because these workplace bullies usually operate within the established rules and procedures of the business organization.

Here are some examples of workplace bullying that can lead to emotional distress:

• Character assassination

• Not providing resources in a fair manner

• Social ostracizing or isolation

• Physical assault

• Destruction of property or work product

• Falsely accusing someone of work error

Health Effects

According to studies, it was discovered that workplace bullying affects the health of employees.

Workplace bullying could lead to various negative effects in the body that leads to physical, psychological and emotional distress.

As a result, it causes more workers to use "sick days" or take time off from work.

In addition, it does not only affect the individual targeted by the bullying but those around him/her as well.

Studies also discovered that there are negative effects such as fear, stress and increased emotional distress to those who witnesses the workplace bullying.

Likely Targets

The usual targets of workplace bullies are people who are cooperative and have a non-confrontational personality.

With regards to specific demographics, statistics show that 57% of those who reported being a victim of workplace bullying are women and that 60% of those likely to be workplace bullies are men.

The funny thing about it is that the targets of most women bullies are also women.

In terms of race, people of Hispanic race are most likely to be targeted or have been a victim of workplace bullying.

Taking action

The first thing to consider is if there really is workplace bullying. If a boss screams or insults an employee, it may be because of a poorly done job. If two employees are hostile to each other because of a personal conflict then it is not workplace bullying.

Although all these can cause emotional distress, the courts are not expected to resolve every personal conflict that arises in the workplace. They still encourage that the company resolve it internally.

To know if your emotional distress is caused by workplace bullying, consider the following factors:

• Consistency - If the mistreatment occurs regularly over a long period of time

• Escalation - Workplace bullying usually increase in hostility and aggression over time

• Malicious intent - The bullies are acting on a desire to deliberately harm or humiliate someone

If you are suffering from emotional distress because of workplace bullying, you should seek legal assistance to help you take legal actions. An employment attorney should be able to help you file an emotional distress at workplace claim against the offending party.

To pursue emotional distress claims caused by discrimination, get help from our professional employment attorneys. Visit our website and call our toll free number.

How To Deal With Workplace Bullying In 3 Easy Steps

It might seem surprising to you that a good number of people need to learn how to deal with workplace bullying. After all, doesn’t bullying end in high school? Who would have thought that such a thing happens in an office setting too?

If you are worried and want to learn how to deal with workplace bullying, then this article is for you. Read on to find out how to handle this tough situation.

Step 1: Recognize What Is Happening.

First things first: recognize that you are being bullied and that it is by no means your fault. The “bully” might have something to say about your performance or your appearance; but that is his problem and not yours.

You have to understand that most of the time, the bully is merely projecting his own insecurities and fears onto you.

Step 2: Make A Stand And Take Control.

Now that you’ve established who really has a problem here, it is now time for you to take matters into your own hands. You can’t just ignore the situation and you don’t have to face it alone either.

Get help if you can. Since this is happening in the workplace, you can report the incident to your immediate supervisor.

When learning how to deal with workplace bullying, you need to look at the situation from a logical point of view. It would be helpful if you take note of every bullying incident that happened to you. List down the details: what happened, when it happened and who were involved.

If the “bully” has sent you emails, SMS messages or notes, save them all in a safe place for they can serve as evidence in the future.

Step 3: Build A Support Network.

The more people you have around you, the less likely you’ll be targeted for bullying. Your support network can be comprised of your friends, family and co-workers.

These are the people who you can turn to after an especially hard day at work. They’ll be around to encourage you to do your best every single day.

It’s not easy learning how to deal with workplace bullying. You may be tempted to strike back; but more often than not, that’s only going to make things worse, especially if you can’t really defend yourself.

You can, however, show that you’re not as weak as the bully makes you out to be. Do your best to excel in the workplace and who knows, you may one day be promoted to a higher position than that of the “bully.” And when that happens, he will have to think twice before doing anything to you.

Conflict Resolution in Work Teams

The process of building a team is no easy task. It requires a lot of commitment, cooperation and communication from all those involved. Everyone in the team should be sharing a common goal and everyone should contribute equally to the team’s efforts. Conflicts are inevitable in work teams, but are not something that have to prevent the team from growing and accomplishing it’s goals. Setting up a solid team structure and negotiating and mediating all disputes will increase chances of success in work teams.

About work teams

The implementing of work teams is surfacing more often and becoming more prominent in various organizations. Corporations have discovered the effectiveness of work teams and how they can resolve problems such as moral issues, performance issues and many others. (Capozzoli 1999) There are many factors which can prevent the teams from achieving there goals and many issues will surface and have to be delt with in order to have a successful team environment. Socialization is a very important part of team success. This is the stage when team members learn what is required of them to be a part of the team. The socialization of members is typically broken down into stages. There are typically three stages which include, the anticipation stage, the accommodation stage and the acceptance phase. (Capozzoli, T.K. 1995) The anticipation stage occurs first and is prior to a person even joining the team. In this stage future members will think about what may be expected of them when they join the team. They can start preparing for the team and think how they will be able to contribute. The next phase is the accommodation stage. This is where team members become involved with the team on a daily basis. Members will be contributing on a day-to-day basis. At this stage it will become clear to members of the team what is expected of them. Members will learn what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior in the team. The final stage of socialization is the acceptance stage. In this stage members are taking responsibility for their roles on the team. At this stage team members will feel that they are a part of the group and that they are contributing to the teams success. (Bowditch, J. L., Buono, A. F. 1997)

Why are there conflicts in teams?

Conflict can arise from numerous sources within a team setting and generally falls into three categories: communication factors, structural factors and personal factors. The first category is Communication. Poor listening skills, ignoring team members, wrongful interpretation and lack of sharing information are all a part of this barrier. These can lead to many misunderstandings. The second category is structural factors, which does not play much of a role with a college work team, as it does in a business. Regardless, disagreements that occur include the size of the organization, levels of participation and reward systems. Finally, personal factors include problems that occur with an individual’s self-esteem, their personal goals, values and needs. All of these differences can pose a challenge for the team as a whole. It may be difficult to get everyone in the team working together and contributing equally. (Capozzoli 1999) Communications are the key to success. A team must understand conflicts unpredictability and its impact on individuals and the team as a whole. These conflicts must be resolved and dealt with before the team falls apart.

Pros and Cons of Conflict

Conflict does not always become destructive. It can lead to a variety of ideas and give team members an interest in dealing with problems. It can give individuals the opportunity to develop their communication skills and express their personal thoughts to their team members. If you look at it from this perspective, it can be considered a positive thing. Conflict becomes negative when it is left to escalate to the point where people begin to feel defeated and a combative climate of distrust and suspicion develops. Nelson cautions that negative conflict can destroy a team quickly, and often arises from poor planning. He offers the list of high potential areas from which negative conflict issues commonly arise both in the workplace and in college:

· Administration Procedures: If the team lacks good groundwork for what it’s doing, its members will not be able to coordinate their work.

· People Resources: If the team does not have enough resources to do the job, it is inevitable that some will carry too heavy a load. Resentment, often unexpressed, may build, so it is crucial that team leaders ensure adequate resources.

· Cost overruns (work place mainly): Often inevitable, cost overruns become a problem when proper measures are not taken. The whole team should know early on when cost becomes a problem so additional funding can be sought by the team. This way the problem can be resolved before it grows into a problem for management.

· Schedules: The schedule is highly consequential to the team’s project and should be highly visible. All members should be willing to work together to help each other meet their deadlines.

· Responsibilities: Each team member must know what areas are assigned and who is accountable for them.

· Wish Lists: Stick to the project at hand and avoid being sidetracked into trying to fit other things into it. Wait and do the other things you would like to do after successful completion of the original project.
(Bowditch, J. L., Buono, A. F. 1997).

Team members can and should attempt to avoid negative conflict from occurring. Being aware of the potential for negative conflict to occur and taking the necessary steps to ensure good planning will help. (Esquivel, M.A. & Kleiner, B.H. 1997)

Identify strengths/weaknesses

What will be one person’s weakness will possibly be another team member’s strengths. It is important early on to have each team member identify for the group what their skills are. Team members should identify the areas in which they will be the most effective and what areas they will be of least assistance. Some team members will be better at proof reading while others will be better at organizing and structuring the projects. Those team members who are visual learns should be assigned the visual task, such as creating tables, charts and other visuals. A very important part of a team is having everyone contribute equally. If one person is given a higher workload then their teammates, a sure conflict will develop. Team will need to lay out what is to be completed and from there distribute it equally to all members of the group.

Scheduling conflicts

People lead many different lives and have many different responsibilities, so it is not always easy for teams to coordinate a meeting. What is a good time for one member may be the busiest time of day for another. Thanks to modern technology team meeting are more easily possible. Do to advances in technology and the Internet, teams are able to met up at any time and any place in either a chat room or on a message board. Studies have found increased participation in computer-supported groups. (Nelson, M 1995) During computer discussions, team members felt more comfortable presenting their ideas and views during computer discussions than during the traditional meeting sessions. The convenience is a big advantage as well. With just a click of the mouse a team can be off and running exchanging ideas and planning for upcoming projects. Scheduling conflict need to be ironed out early on in the beginning stages of forming a team. A team cannot function unless all members are available to meet.

Lack of equal participation

In order to prevent non-equal participation teams need to come together early on and come to an agreement about participation. If it still becomes an issue there are several ways to go about resolving the lack of participation between members. Team members need to communicate with those they feel are not doing their part. Members need to injure about was they perceive as a lack of participation. It is very possible that the one who is not participating is not aware that everyone else in the groups feels this way. Finding out what each member of the group is feeling is the best way to start before approaching a member who is not participating. If it is determined that a member does not want to give equal participation, the group still needs to go on. I

Understanding and overcoming differences

The most important thing to remember when addressing a team conflict is the way in which it is handed is critical. You want to be able to manage the conflict in an effective manner in a way that you solve the problems but keep the group together at the same time. It would be of no advantage to the group if you chose the wrong approach to resolve conflicts and in turn break up the group. Teamwork is not something that can be demanded. It is a fragile structure which needs to be handled delicately so as not to dissolve the group. The key to successful group projects is encouragement of an open, frank dialogue among all participants. Once people feel as though they are able freely available to express their viewpoints without undue criticism or condemnation, a free-flowing environment will materialize. This kind of atmosphere is most conducive to productive work-product creation. Tribulations may crop up, but they can be dealt with in a professional, adult manner. (Porter J.D., Shelia 2003).

After correctly identifying what specific problems have arisen in the group environment, the next step is eradicating, to the extent possible, subject problems. Several methods of resolution may be employed to varying degrees of success. The importance of appropriately classifying the difficulties the team is experiencing cannot be understated. Different problems may require fundamentally different responses.

Conflict Resolution

One method of conflict resolution is collaboration. This least-confrontational technique attempts to solve the problem by including everyone’s thoughts. After synthesizing each team member’s ideas, the best parts are selected to form the whole. Cooperative efforts made by the team can produce a solid result. This system is appropriate for groups containing especially delicate members and/or those with an inflated sense of self-worth. Perhaps the most effective method of conflict resolution is compromise. The first—and possibly most—important part of compromising is the realization that each person will have to relinquish something for the greater good. Once they can move beyond that, the rest is fairly simple. Even though limited satisfaction may result from seeing some of your work disregarded, a positive end-result should make up for a bruised ego. (Nelson, M 1995)

While others may entertain certain measures of conflict resolution such as avoidance or accommodation, those can prove ineffective and may actually cause larger problems down the line. By ignoring the predicament, it does a disservice to the views that have been stifled and the potentially positive contribution that may otherwise have been included in the project. Another method of solving disagreements is re-shuffling the team members. By altering the construction, a more agreeable stance might be agreed upon. With different people assigned to new tasks, fresh ideas may emerge and the conflict may resolve of its own volition. Even if that does not exclusively answer the quandary, reorganization may tamper down some of the previous problems enough that productive work can now be done. (Porter J.D., Shelia 2003).

Disagreement amongst team members does not necessarily have to represent a problem. In fact, a divergence of viewpoints can be celebrated as being a valuable asset to the ultimate goal of the team. Groups, while sometimes born of necessity, may also be created specifically for the purpose of encouraging a more creative, diverse project through the input of several unique viewpoints.

Conflict resolution inside a learning team is paramount to its success. Serious disagreement among team members can severely impact the group’s work or even grind operations to a halt. Teams may try and prevent disruptions from even arising while working together, but inevitably, when people from different backgrounds with diverse viewpoints merge, there will be some measure of disagreement. In order for the team to be effective, a reasonable solution to conflicts that may arise must be employed. Varying circumstances necessitate any one of a multitude of approaches. When the best process is applied, the problem can be discarded and the important work of the team can progress. Through the understanding and acceptance of the value of each team member, internal conflicts may be resolved in an expedient, efficient manner that will strengthen, rather than weaken, the group’s mission.

Good communication and team work

People cannot not communicate... the fact is that the way one communicates reflects one's innermost self, one's skills, one's confidence.

The ability to communicate:

Has a direct bearing on one's friendships, promotion, pay raises, responsibilities, career paths.

It directly affects the level of support and help one receives from others. This is where good communication and team work go hand-in-hand.

Determines how well one gathers and gives information, ideas and feelings.

It decides how well one solves their problems, makes decisions, reach agreements and resolve disagreements.

70% of mistakes at the workplace are a direct result of poor communications.

The communication impact:

7% Verbal

38% Tone of Voice

55% Body Language

... These abovementioned aspects help the receiver interpret and understand the meaning of what is being communicated in a team and otherwise.

The way one begins to transfer their message determines the outcome of the communication process

Thus, one needs to prepare, think carefully how, when and where to deliver. Given here are important pointers to keep in mind to understand what effective communications is all about, especially when team workings come into play...

The way a message is delivered always affects the way it is received.

How one says something is more important than what one actually says.

The real communication is the message received and not the message intended to be delivered.

Find out how important it is to the other person, how much they already know and what their previous experience was.

Communication is a two-way lane - There is giving and receiving.

Good and free communication in a team or between two people is therapeutic.

The barriers that occur in communicating with others:

Obstacles within the self: One tends to screen information and messages, thereby limiting one's understanding and communication ability.

Self beliefs, mindsets, etc., that limit one from seeing the larger picture of life.

People do not talk to each other, but to the images they have about each other.

Physical barriers like noise, etc., make concentration on what is being communicated rather difficult.

The compatibility between the communicators tend to make it uncomfortable, awkward to communicate.

Tendency to evaluate and judge - approve or disapprove other's statement.

Gateways to effective team communications:

Listening with understanding.

One needs to empathize with the speaker.

Aim to achieve the speakers his frame of reference in regard to what he/she is speaking about.

Good communication skills is required to grow in any business or profession. If you want to improve your communication skills you need to read more of inspirational books or short stories on communication.

Sexual Orientation Discrimination in Workplace: What You Need to Know

Gays and lesbians are vulnerable to harassment and discrimination because of their sexual orientation. But with the growing awareness and acceptance, the society has realized that these people should be given the equal rights just like everyone else.

Presently, there is a federal anti-discriminatory law that protects gay people and prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation in all federal institutions. However, this law does not cover gays who are working in private companies.

While the federal law is limited, many states such as California, New York, Washington, Connecticut, Oregon, Rhode Island, and New Jersey have laws that prohibit any form of discrimination against gay people working from private companies. Also, many cities and counties have outlawed discrimination based on sexual preference.

Meanwhile, some states and cities have no anti-discrimination law that protects gay workers. Still, a pragmatic employer should not allow discrimination in his office or company since he is legally liable in incidents which involve harassment, assault, invasion of privacy, wrongful termination, breach of contract, and defamation against gay workers.

According to lawyers, employers should provide training for their workers that will teach them about employment discrimination. Providing such training is practical since employers may not only avoid costly lawsuit, but also allow workers to be productive since they are free from harassment and discrimination.

To create a workplace free from abuses, discrimination, and harassment, many companies across the US have included policies which prohibit discrimination against gay workers. Such policies include penalties for the harasser or anyone who will commit discriminatory act and guidelines on the proper conduct and behavior.

Here are the other ways an employer can do to prevent sexual orientation discrimination:

1. Understand current laws. Employers should know the current laws that protect workers from marginalized sectors including gay people.

2. Make sure that employment processes (e.g. recruitment, promotion, termination, etc.) are consistent and fair.

3. If an applicant or employee reveals his/her sexual orientation, employers and supervisors should keep it confidential.

4. Communicate and ask workers if there is any discriminatory act happening in the workplace.

5. Observe if workers understand and follow the company's anti-discrimination policies.

6. Provide workers with regular training about sexual orientation laws, prevention, and policies.

7. Establish a complaint process and assign a credible supervisor who will handle cases of sexual orientation discrimination.

8. During an investigation, employers should make certain decisions that will prevent further discrimination and harassment. These include reassigning the complainant and the alleged harasser from different areas and asking the involved parties to avoid each other while the investigation is still ongoing.

9. Encourage workers to report any case of discrimination to the company's complaint process. Employers can avoid costly lawsuit if a worker reports such incident to the company instead of reporting this to a federal court.

10. Do not retaliate against workers who file sexual orientation lawsuit.
