THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL SAFETY.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL SAFETY.

It is important to remember that despite media reports to the contrary you are highly unlikely o be the victim of a violent assault. Millions of people make journeys every year in comfort and safety. However a small number of people are unfortunate enough to encounter a violent criminal.

This article is not a complete guide to personal safety. However it will give you ideas that may help prevent you becoming a victim of violence. It is important to remember that attackers rarely target their victims at random. A few simple tactics will enable you to travel with confidence and a new feeling of personal empowerment. The reason we choose to explore the world around us is to learn about ourselves and the cultures we travel through.

BE AWARE

Awareness of your surroundings and the people around you is the most important skill to develop. When you enter a train carriage note who is sitting where. What is the atmosphere? Listen to your instincts if it feels wrong then it probably is wrong. Humans have fairly weak armour compared to our animal cousins. We do not have large bony exoskeletons or super hearing to keep us safe from predators. To survive we fragile humans have a highly developed sense of survival. Our awareness triggers our flight or fight mechanism. Sadly in our technological age we use our senses less but they are still ever present warning us of danger.

Observation.

Awareness of your surroundings brings with it added colour to your travels, practice trying to spot as many features of your surroundings as possible. When tracking we cultivate our observation and awareness by slowing down and listening to our environment. Watch and feel the natural rhythms that guide us. If your walking alone at night and you feel you're being watched listen and look carefully to see what is around you. If a dog barks what does that signal ahead perhaps its time to cross the road to avoid an area of shadow that may conceal someone hiding.

Plan.

Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance

Whenever we undertake a journey it takes planning. It maybe as little as finding the car keys and ensuring there is enough fuel in the car to get to journeys end. An expedition to some remote corner of the world may take years of careful thought to ensure a safe conclusion.

Plan Make sure you have checked the map before you leave and you have the correct equipment with you for the journey. Tell someone responsible where you are heading and let them know you have arrived or decided to change plans. The rescue services are called out needlessly every year because people forget let others know they have arrived safely or altered plans.

Look Look confident and walk boldly. Do not appear lost and vulnerable. Predators are looking for an easy prey.

Always Avoid taking unnecessary risks. Arriving home late is better than not at all.

Never Assume it will never happen to you. Be prepared and have a plan ready to be put into action. You are in control of your own destiny.

Whenever I begin a journey or expedition I begin with the same process.

Research. This is the fun part I am learning about the area I will be travelling through, reading accounts of others that have been before. Learning about the culture of the people and their customs etc. Its good to check early what vaccinations are needed for the area as some take time to administer. What is the local medical facility? Is there trained staff with clean medical instruments? Most needles in Africa will have been used several times before they are binned.

Logistics. Once you have a destination in mind you must work out how you're going to get there. What transport services exist? Will your airline charge extra for your bike etc?

Equipment I try to take as few personal items as possible when travelling. There is nothing worse than dragging a huge case through customs. Most equipment can be sourced cheaply in country.

Emergency. It is important to have an emergency plan in place if things start to go wrong. You must have proper insurance cover and means of communication. Many rescue services abroad may charge and the costs quickly add up. Rescue from the Inca trail could cost more than $20000 for example. Remember your trusty mobile phone may not have a reception. In truly remote locations you maybe days from help. It is important then to have a satellite phone. These can be hired relatively cheaply. You can then access medical help etc. It may also be worth investing in an EPIRB. These are personal distress beacons monitored by the emergency services.

When Travelling.

It is important to keep your valuables safe and secure. Store them out of sight, it is much more difficult to steal what you cannot see. Be aware that bags maybe snatched. Keep your money in a money belt but have some cash free for small purchases. You do not want to be trying to get to your money belt every time you want a bottle of water. Travel in a vehicle with the doors locked. Many people have been attacked when stopped at lights. Keep your windows closed and use the sunroof if fitted or the air conditioning. Only use official taxis and agree a price before getting in.

Remember to be alert and listen to your instincts. If something feels wrong then listen and be prepared to alter your plans. Wait for another taxi or catch a bus.

If you feel threatened when travelling it is important to relax. If you are tense your reactions will be slowed and you may miss vital information. Concentrate on your breathing and consciously relax your muscles. Wiggle your fingers and toes. If you are driving and feel someone is following you or behaving in an overtly aggressive manner. Drive to the nearest police station and seek help. Do not leave your car and engage in argument avoid confrontation and direct eye contact. In the event of a minor collision let the other driver know you are going to the nearest police station or use your mobile to contact the police and explain the situation. Beware cars have been deliberately knocked to get the occupants out of the vehicle so a crime can be committed. If a car tries to force you to stop wait until the occupant is out of their car and reverse whilst sounding your horn to attract attention. Make a note of the cars registration and call the police.

In the event of an accident only stop if it safe to do so. The first rule of first aid is not to become a casualty yourself. Do you have the proper skills to offer assistance? Making a call to the authorities maybe all the help it is safe to provide.

Breakdowns.

When driving it is important to carry a few essentials in your car kit. A car kit is a matter of personal choice and will depend on the environment you are driving through. Suburban London has very different conditions from the desert.

Car Kit Contents:

Ø Breakdown Service Policy Details.

Ø Spare Coins for telephone.

Ø Pen and Notebook

Ø Mobile Phone. (Always ensure it is fully charged and has sufficient credit)

Ø Road atlas

Ø A good First Aid Kit

Ø A Torch and Spare batteries.

Ø Whistle

Ø Swiss army Knife or Multi tool.

Ø 2l Bottle of mineral water.

Ø Puncture Repair Kit.

Ø Tow Rope

Ø Jump Leads.

Ø Spare clothing.

Ø Cheap waterproof coat.

Ø Blanket.

Ø Spare food.

Ø Fuel container.

Ø Warning triangle.

In the event of a breakdown it is important to get the car as far off the road as possible. Switch on the hazard lights. Use your mobile telephone to call the break down service or walk to the nearest telephone.

On the motorway several people are killed each year when then vehicle is collided into on the hard shoulder. I prefer to stand near the car watching the oncoming traffic. Have the doors locked except the passenger door. If you feel threatened you can easily retreat to your car. Ensure that anyone coming to your assistance knows your name and details. Do not allow a stranger into your car. Inform anyone offering assistance that the police is aware and on its way.

When travelling it is important to keep your tickets safe and do not advertise your final destination. Warning bells should ring if a stranger tries forced teaming. Once they have your destination it is easy to suggest that you share the cost of a taxi etc. If you feel uncomfortable then an assertive no should suffice. Beware of people being overly charming to manipulate your decision-making. Niceness does not always equate to the best of intentions. You will develop an awareness of when people are naturally charming or when they are trying to use charm intentionally to manipulate. People seeking to manipulate often use charm and false kindness to create a sense of trust. Another method used on the unwary is to give too many details during a conversation. This guides the victim to believe a certain image that the aggressor is trying to convey. Also beware the stranger that makes unsolicited promises. If it looks too good to be true, there is probably a reason. An offer to stay in a friend's villa for free may just be a ploy to isolate you from the crowds etc.

Self Defence.

A confrontation avoided is the best defence possible. I have trained in martial arts for 20 years but would still much prefer not to get into a conflict. Our observation and awareness is often enough to enable us to prevent a situation getting out of control. However there are times when it is impossible to avoid a struggle.

You do not have to be super human to learn to defend yourself. The more complex you try to make your techniques the more chance you have of messing them up. The key to good self-defence is to keep it simple and do what you see. Every situation is unique and there is no correct method. As long as you use reasonable force the law will be on your side. Therefore carrying a knife for self-protection would get you into trouble with the police and rightly so. I do not recommend you carry tools to defend yourself. Once armed you are more likely to have a confrontational mindset and also a tool will make defending yourself more complex. Remember if you are attacked to make lots of noise.

Do Not scream shout loudly to the attacker to leave you alone. Use your voice as a weapon. Learn to make a fist and use it. Also make sure your technique is effective. Kick low and hard, as this is much faster and harder to see.

Protecting Against Pornography in the Digital Age

It was inevitable with the birth of the Internet that pornography would wind its way into this new digital territory. With all of the value provided by online information and communication technologies, these advancements have nonetheless also become inextricably linked with developments in pornography distribution. Fortunately, new technology brings not only new outlets for pornography, but also new ways to protect against it.

There are several sources of unwanted pornography. The web is the most obvious one, but adult content also makes its way on to external drives (floppy, CD-ROM, DVD and flash), into email attachments and on to files that may be shared in a networked environment. The right software can protect you across all of these distribution avenues.

The first factor to evaluate when choosing protection software is how the software does its job. Many products designed to protect against pornography rely on databases of known pornographic web sites. Unfortunately, the speed of life on the Internet means that web sites are added and edited around the clock, and databases quickly grow outdated. The best software solutions use technology that dynamically blocks offensive images before they are displayed and viewed. This type of technology, unlike database-driven software, means that even new threats are recognized and blocked before they hit your screen.

Monitoring computer usage goes hand in hand with detecting pornography on the PC. Strong protection software uses two monitoring weapons: a visible deterrent that lets users know they are being monitored, and a reporting function that keeps detailed records of what, when and where pornography is viewed. Sometimes the visible deterrent is enough to ward of inappropriate behavior. When it’s not, automated record-keeping tracks behavior so that you can handle it at your own discretion.

Flexibility also impacts the effectiveness of a software solution, which means the software you select should be customizable. The right level of protection depends on the audience, and you need to be able to set the appropriate controls accordingly. This includes both setting sensitivity levels and defining your own known safe (white) and unsafe (black) web sites.

The last two key components in protection software are where it works and how much it costs. The where is important because, as the world moves to laptops, a server-based solution is no solution at all. Protection must extend to stand-alone PCs or mobile computers (when not connected to a network). Wherever the user goes, the software shield against pornography should follow.

Cost can be either a one-time fee or an ongoing subscription. Are you are willing to shell out dollars on a monthly or annual basis, or would you rather spend money once and avoid ongoing payments? Most filtering protection software products require ongoing payments via a monthly or annual fee, but others that are installed on home computers or business networks are obtained through a one-time license fee. If you prefer to “buy” a solution rather than “rent” it at an ongoing cost, look for one that offers that option.

There are a lot of products on the market designed to protect against pornography. Choosing the right one for your home, office or organization will make a critical difference in the quality of your digital life. Evaluate your options and select software that blocks offensive images at the point of display, includes monitoring capabilities and meets the specific needs of your environment. These key elements will steer you toward the highest quality solution for improved online security and productivity.

Is LPG better for the environment?

The debate about the affect that car pollution is having on the environment is a major taking point in the press and with governments now being pressured into trying to alter our driving habits would a move to LPG be beneficial to the environment?

The simple answer is yes!!

Carbon Dioxide is the main greenhouse gas and the low carbon content of LPG compared with petrol helps reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being produced by vehicles which could have a huge benefit in the quality of air in built up urban areas throughout the UK. LPG fuel also burns a lot cleaner than petrol thus reducing the amount of pollution entering our environment. The table below from Autogasscotland.com shows the comparisons in the levels of pollution produced by petrol and diesel cars compared with LPG. Showing that converting to LPG can have a beneficial effect on the environment.

The Major of London has introduced congestion charge schemes in London and there are plans to introduce these zones across the UK in a bid to reduce pollution. By charging car owners a congestion charge to enter these zones the hope is to reduce the amount of vehicles on the road and thus reduce pollution. The major benefit of converting to LPG is that all LPG vehicles are immune from these charges which can create great savings for those who are entering these zones on a regular basis. LPG is the greener option and those people driving LPG cars will see benefits not only in fuel economy and savings but they will be helping the environment at the same time.

In addition, there are a lot of discussions about road charging schemes that would incorporate car emissions.

Ergonomics At Work Osha Is On The Job

The French poet Charles Baudelaire observed back in the 1800s, “Inspiration comes of working every day.” Most people do work every day, and unfortunately it’s not only inspiration that comes of it. Repetitive stress injuries (RSI) are also the result of every day tasks performed again and again while operating a computer. Relief is in sight, however, thanks in part to a particular government agency. This organization is raising awareness and promoting solutions 24/7.

The Occupational safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has a mandate to protect employees from being hurt in the workplace. James Hodgson, Secretary of Labor, established OSHA within his department in 1971. This was in response to the Occupational safety and Health Act, legislation he helped author. For the first time in U.S. history, the government stepped in to make sure that workers were as protected as possible from illness, injury, and death on the job. And OSHA had its work cut out for it. Construction, chemical, and agricultural workers were among the many who needed better safety standards in their industries.

But as computer use rose, and the related RSI grew, OSHA turned its attention to this new problem. In recent years, OSHA has developed a four part program designed to reduce injuries and illnesses associated with computer use on the job. The four parts are

Guidelines, Outreach and Assistance, Enforcement, and the National Advisory Committee.

Guidelines are recommended practices that are developed for specific tasks and industries. These are voluntary, not mandatory. Employers use the guidelines to identify and modify risks in the workplace. Implementing these practices reduces injuries related to the way people do their jobs.

The Outreach and Assistance component of this program is aimed at businesses of all sizes. OSHA wants companies to take a proactive stance when it comes to preventing RSI. To help employers, OSHA designed an extensive array of tools that educate, analyze, and train people regarding the ergonomics of their jobs. Available to the public for free on the OSHA website, the computer workstation portion of the Ergonomics eTools is a comprehensive guide to proper computing techniques.

Included in this section is:

Good Working Position (talks about every part of the body and what the best placement is for preventing RSI)

Workstation Components (all the technology and furniture you commonly use is listed here with possible hazards, solutions, and tips)

Checklist (a great way to evaluate how you’re doing ergonomically while you operate a computer)

Work Process (focuses on the physical movements of computer use, with hazards to watch for, more solutions, and tips)

Workstation Environment (information about factors people often don’t think about such as lighting, ventilation, and glare)

But Outreach and Assistance is more than the Ergonomic eTools. It has industry guidelines, cooperative programs, ergonomic analysis info, and success stories. It even has a checklist with tips for new purchases. It is chock full of valuable information for everyone from the individual computer user to the captains of industry.

OSHA persists in its campaign to help employers and employees prevent Repetitive Stress Injuries. If the folks at OSHA have their way, inspiration will be the only result of long hours of work in front of a computer. Baudelaire would approve

Five Frequent Health and Safety Threats In The Work Area

The workplace has several hazards that need to be addressed. This is where risk assessment comes in. The employer has the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the workers. Assessing the potential risks in the workplace, formulating a sound safety policy, and enhancing you and your employees' capacity to deal with these risks are just some of the ways of ensuring protection against and avoidance of any untoward incidents.

These are the five most common hazards we encounter while in the workplace and what can be done to prevent accidents and other misfortunes.

1. Confined places - A confined space can be defined as an area or workplace which, "because of its construction, location or contents or the work activity therein, a hazardous gas, vapour, dust or fume or an oxygen-deficient atmosphere may occur." In occupations which require a person to enter and exit an open or enclosed tank, vat, sewer, pipe, utility vault, and other similar constructions, extra care is needed.

A specially designed training course for employees to be more competent and adapted to a confined working environment will significantly reduce any possibility of accidents by training the employees on entry and working in these confined locations.

2. Explosions and fires - There are workplaces, which as a consequence of the nature of the business, are more prone to explosions and fires than other working environments. Therefore a Fire Safety Protocol is of paramount importance. Employer and employee must have adequate knowledge on fire hazards, fire prevention and procedures.

There should be basic practical skills in fire safety. Fire protection equipment, signage, and diagrams must be provided, as well as the carrying out of fire drills in the workplace.

3. Noise management - In factories where large machineries are used in the manufacture, noise is but an ordinary feature of the workplace. However, the noise should not exceed the "exposure to noise levels that exceed an eight-hour noise equivalent of 85 dB(A) or peak at more than 140 dB(C)."

A onetime too much exposure to noise can result to a temporary loss of hearing, change in hearing, or a ringing in your ears (or tinnitus). However, if the exposure to loud noises is continuous and unavoidable, it can lead to permanent ear ringing, or worse, hearing loss. Therefore, as much as possible, eliminate or tone down loud noises in the workplace or if the noise can be controlled, the company must provide protective hearing gears to its workers.

4. Occupational Injuries - Every day, many workers suffer from traumatic injuries they acquired from their workplaces. Although, most of these are nonfatal, but some are serious enough that the injury necessitates job transfer, various work restrictions, and some time away from their job.

One of these occupational injuries is musculoskeletal injury (MSI). Musculoskeletal injury is described as the "disorders of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and other soft tissues of the body." MSI usually results because of a prolonged repetitive, awkward, or demanding postures and movements which will take its toll on the body.

5. Electrical hazards in the workplace - Whether you are working with electricity (as an electrician, electrical engineer, line men and other professionals) or just an ordinary employee, the likelihood of electrical hazards is not to be disregarded. The down side is that the ordinary employee is unaware of the potential electrical risk present in the environment, unlike the professionals whose specialty is electricity.

These are just the most common workplace risks. Each employee must be well aware of the risks his/her job entails. Moreover, it is the employer's responsibility to ensure that the workplace is as safe as possible for the workers. A sound safety plan must be in place to address the possibilities of occurrence of these workplace hazards. Together, employer and employee can come up with the necessary policies and procedures.
