10 Tips to Protect Your Basement from Mold Growth

Does your basement ever flood? Is your basement ever damp? If so, you may need to inspect your basement for mold, and possibly remodel it to remove the mold.

You may suspect hidden mold if your basement smells moldy, but you cannot see the source. You may know there has been water damage, but not think there is mold. Mold may be hidden in places such as the back side of drywall, behind wallpaper, or paneling, the top side of ceiling tiles, underneath carpets and pads, etc.

Mold could also be hidden around leaking pipes, or pipes that are constantly covered with condensation. Heat and air conditioning ducts also can hide mold that can affect your family.

You may want to hire an experienced professional when investigating in your basement for mold, because sometimes when looking for mold, spores can be released that are dangerous for your health. You would be amazed at how many mold spores can be released when pulling off basement wallpaper.

Conventional construction materials used in basement remodeling and basement construction in the past are perfect for mold growth. Since they frequently contain wood and paper based products, they provide a great food source for mold, as well as soaking and holding water for long periods of time.

Here are some tips for preventing mold growth in your basement:

1. Control mold growth by acting quickly when water leaks or spills in your basement. Make it a goal to have any basement leaks or spills to be completely dry in 24-48 hours.

2. Make sure the ground outside your home slopes away from the building, so water is directed away from the house instead of collecting and leaking into the basement.

3. Purchase a humidity meter at the hardware store, and keep basement humidity below 60 percent.

4. If you see a lot of condensation on your basement pipes or basement windows, work fast to reduce humidity and dry those surfaces. Lots of condensation can be a sign of high humidity in your basement.

5. Run a dehumidifier in your basement. It will do wonders to pull moisture out of the air, preventing mold growth.

6. Make sure clothes dryers are vented outside of the basement, not inside. The moisture from drying clothes stays in the air and can encourage basement mold growth.

7. If you have a shower in your basement bathroom, install an exhaust fan to pull moist air out of the bathroom while the shower is running.

8. Cover cold surfaces like cold basement water pipes with insulation to prevent basement condensation.

9. Increase the temperature of your basement. Hot air can hold more moisture without causing condensation on basement surfaces.

10. Use fans to keep the air moving. A well ventilated basement will be less likely to become moldy.

Solar Attic Fans - Do They Actually Work?

We all know that our energy consumption has a huge impact on the environment (yay-yah-yah).

We all also know that we ought to be doing whatever we can to reduce green house gases. But it sometimes takes a little bit of effort and this effort can be a tad inconvenient. Yes?

Yes. Absolutely. Glad we agree. Thank you.

The question is, are solar attic fans worth the cost? Are they worth the price of shipping AND installation cost?

Maybe.

It depends on you and your motivation to "save the planet". Perhaps you will feel less guilty knowing you are "doing your part" to be a conscientiously environmental person. Will that make you feel better?

The fact is, the planet is not in danger: WE ARE. Here's why: The planet has been through billions of years of asteroid bombardments, the extinction of countless life forms, major transformations over and over again. (the list goes on). Thus, the planet earth has proved itself and it is not going to disappear anytime soon. But humans may, and it may be sooner than we would like to acknowledge while we drink our fancy coffees in the morning sitting comfortably in our modern air-conditioned, well heated homes - with our automatic dish-washers and big-screen entertainment units.

Anyway, is it worth the effort and cost to implement solar attic fans to your roof to drastically reduce attic ventilation costs and reduce green house gases? That is the question.

Here's the good news: solar attic fans, or attic solar fans not only "save the earth" but they can also save you money as well.

How?

Well, if your house is very hot during the summer, especially in the upper bedroom floors, it is almost assured that the reason for the extra hotness is directly related to poor attic or roof ventilation, or roof or attic insulation. A solar attic fan can easily stop this from happening.

If you are not interested in taking the time, cost, or effort to have an solar attic fan installed to your home, that may be a good decision because other alternative are available such as baffled ridge vent roof ventilation. If you ARE interested, here are some excellent pointers to help you get on the right track when deciding on a solar attic fan.

Many attic solar fans (or roof solar fans) are available. Most are basic and really do not cover the cost and most are quite poor at absorbing the sun's power. Another extremely important point is to NOT NEED a solar attic fan because there are very amazing wind-driven fans that are much more effective depending on the design of your roof.

When do you REALLY need an solar attic fan?

You only truly need a solar attic fan when the design of your roof is very high-sloped, or with not much ridge area. Why? Because the higher the pitch or slope of a roof, the more difficult is is for fresh air to move up and outwards. If your roof is low-sloped, you may not need a solar attic fan.

In conclusion: Contact a professional roof insulation, attic ventilation expert and be sure that your attic is thoroughly inspected BEFORE buying any solar attic fan.

Rick Woolsey is an expert advisor for solar attic fans and is the owner of Roof Insulation Protection (RIP) located in Toronto, Canada.

How Can A Montessori School Save You Money?

Is it possible to save money by sending your child to a Montessori school? First, it’s important to understand how a Montessori classroom operates. The classroom is an environment for self-education and self-realization. The room is divided up into different learning stations. There are 5 stations in most classrooms:

• Practical Life – This area develops task organization and promotes the understanding of cognitive order.

• Sensorial – This area teaches the students to classify and describe sensory impressions such as length, width, temperature, color, etc. Special Montessori “games” are used which have metal weights, different length rods, puzzles of the world, United States, etc., and also includes smelling activities.

• Math- The Math station uses manipulative materials to enable the comprehension of number, symbol, sequence, operations concepts and the memorization of basic facts.

• Language – Unique tools are used to communicate the understanding of letters and eventually the recognition of words and finally, the accomplishment of being able to read.

• Cultural Activities – Teachers spend times teaching about different counties of the world. The topics covered are: geography, history, cultures (food, clothing, traditions), music and art. This part of the program gives children a worldly perspective.

My 4 year old son has been attending Montessori school since he was 2½. It’s evident that his language and understanding of the world around him are developing at a rapid pace. In his school, it is expected that pre-schoolers (4 year olds) will know how to read and write before kindergarten.

What impressed me most about this particular school is that they use the Open Court Sound Cards. The sound cards are drilled every day throughout the entire school year. The cards have a picture and a letter on them. Each card represents either a vowel or a consonant. The students learn the letters and their corresponding sounds through repetition and pictures. There are 42 cards in the set, each with a different letter, vowel or letter grouping (the letter grouping example is ‘ph’, to represent the sound ‘f’).

An example is the sound card for the letter ‘W’. There is a picture of two whales whispering to each other. During the lesson, the students chant “Whispering whale, whispering whale, wuh, wuh, wuh.” This repetition enforces the concept of how the letter “W” looks and also what it sounds like. This exercise is the very beginning of learning to read. In order to learn how to read, a child must first learn all the letters of the alphabet and their sounds.

The Open Court Sound Cards, published by McGraw-Hill SRA, are reviewed each day for the entire year. If a child starts learning this at age 2 ½ or 3, she will be putting the letters together and reading at around age 4 ½ to 5. Some other benefits of Open Court learning are:

• Phonological and phonemic awareness

• Print and book awareness

• Alphabetic knowledge

• Oral language skill enhancement

• Vocabulary growth

• improved comprehension

According to www.montessori-ami.org, “A significant finding in Montessori studies is the association between a Montessori education and superior performance on the Math and Science scales of the ACT and WKCE (Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exams). In essence, attending a Montessori program from the approximate ages of three to eleven predicts significantly higher mathematics and science standardized test scores in high school."

To answer the question posed in the title of this article, How Can A Montessori School Save You Money?, the answer is in the child’s future education. Studies show that a Montessori educated child is more confident and enthusiastic about learning and school. He or she will already know how to read and write by kindergarten. Because of this, the child will be less likely to need tutoring or other prep classes during the elementary school years.

Garage Door Safety Beams: How Do They Work?

One of the most important inventions of the last few years has been the advent of the safety beam. The safety beam is a beam of infrared light that sits near the floor of your garage. If something is in the way or if something breaks the beam as your door is closing, the sensor will automatically make the door rise back up. It is basic motion sensor detection technology that, thanks to military research, has come down in price considerably from where it was just a decade ago. Let's take a look at why these beams are so important.

Along with high quality insulation and a durable opening mechanism, the safety beam is definitely one of the most important inventions in garage door history. The idea of someone being crushed under a 400 lb. door has become such a part of modern culture that even the popular television show, The Simpsons, had it happen to clumsy main character Homer Simpson. Of course, for thousands of families across the country, the idea of being crushed to death by your garage door is no laughing matter. According to a 1991 press release by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 46 confirmed deaths from 1982-1990 involving children and garage doors. It was this call by the CPSC and other groups that brought the use of the safety beam into today's homes. Best of all, the addition of safety beams has not significantly increased the cost of garage doors, which makes this addition something everyone can agree on. The beams help protect you and your family from accidents, slips, falls, and disasters. They also protect the garage door companies from being sued by families that have experienced such accidents.

If you have chosen to install your own garage door at home, the safety beam is one of the easiest parts to install. You can purchase a garage door set that includes a safety beam or you can purchase the beams on their own for anywhere from $150-$200. If you aren't sure how to install or retrofit your garage doors with safety beams, you may want to call a professional to do the installation for you. Many of the best safety beams on the market are made by the same manufacturers that make the doors, so you won't have to worry about compatibility problems. If you have a significantly older garage door, however, you may want to consider calling your manufacturer before you go out and invest the money in safety beams.

The safety beam is a basic motion detector. The units transmit a beam from one end to the other that, when broken, serves as an effective safety device. When you close your garage door, the censor in the safety beam allows the door to continue closing as long as the beam remains unbroken. Should a person, pet, or even a piece of paper happen to break the beam, the door will immediately begin to open. It is a long overdue safety feature that works like a charm and can saves lives.

Safety Tips for Your RV Generator

If you want to have electricity in your RV no matter where you go and you don't have a generator, then you are going to want to invest in an RV generator for sale. While shopping for your RV generator you need to be aware that there are three common types available end of these are: a propane generator, a diesel generator, and your standard gas run generator.

And a lot of instances with a gas generator you might run into problems rather quickly if you don't run it often. It is a good idea to fire up your gas powered generator quite frequently in order to keep the intake and carburetor from gumming up.

It is pretty important to make sure that the generator that you are looking at buying is compatible with the fuel that your RV uses. In most instances your generator will shut down by itself when the fuel tank gets low so it doesn't use up all of the available fuel.

Since the generator gives off carbon monoxide, daily exhaust inspection is critical. When using a portable generator, the exhaust should be tested before being used and it should be directed away from the camping or RV area.

It is good to know that you can make use of your generator while you are traveling, and in fact it can be even more economical to run things like your air conditioning off of it instead of using your RV's air conditioner.

A safety note is to always make sure that you never ever run a generator in an area where people are sleeping and not only because of the noise issue but because of the extreme hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning.

You can't get a much more reliable power source for your RV than an RV generator, as with proper care they are well known to outlast the RVs themselves. You never want to let your generator set for too long because if you do it has the potential to begin developing surging problems which will lead to it breaking down.

Four Forklift Battery Dangers And What To Do About Them

Electric forklifts have a number of safety advantages over propane or gasoline powered models, but there are a few dangers workers will be exposed to. Preparation, education and the right battery handling equipment will keep your workers safe and happy.

Electrical

Batteries, of course, hold electricity and can deliver and painful and dangerous electrical shocks to careless workers. Someone being careful to avoid the terminals still might get a nasty surprise if a dangling bracelet or other metal object touches something it shouldn't. Even discharged power cells can hold enough juice to be dangerous.

Workers are kept safe when they use battery handling equipment such as lifters to remove the cells from the forklifts and transport them to a recharging station. Even when using this equipment, workers should avoid wearing metal jewelry and keep metal tools far away from the terminals.

Acid

Battery acid can cause serious burns to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Repeated exposure to acidic vapors leads to respiratory problems including permanent lung damage. Again, battery handling equipment keeps workers safely away from batteries during transport and minimizes the chance a cell should drop and crack open, splashing bystanders with acid. Employees opening battery caps should use appropriate PPE including safety glasses or a face shield.

Hydrogen Gas

During the charging process, batteries produce a small amount of hydrogen gas. In a poorly ventilated area the gas can build up to explosive proportions. The problem is increased if many batteries are being charged in a small space, or if a charger malfunctions and keeps charging even after a power cell is full.

Hydrogen gas is odorless and colorless and cannot normally be detected. In some cases workers report a rotten egg smell, which is actually the hydrogen mixing with the sulphur in the acid to make hydrogen sulfide. The latter can be toxic in large concentrations, but in this case can act as an early warning of a hydrogen gas buildup. To avoid gas buildup, charge batteries only in well-ventilated areas. Smoking, open flames and any equipment that produces electric arcs should all be prohibited in the charging area.

Weight

Forklift power cells are deceptively heavy. A worker looks at the cell and unconsciously expects a certain weight, and even an experienced maintenance employee can be surprised by just how heavy these lead batteries are. Battery handling equipment keeps workers from handling a weight that may be too much for them to handle.

Power cells can easily be removed, replaced and transported without workers having to strain their muscles. Lifters are easy to use, but every worker should receive formal training before handling the equipment. Batteries should be secured in the bed of the equipment before being transported to the recharging station.

The dangers above are not necessarily common, but they can lead to serious injury. Basic safety protocols and battery handling equipment should be part of any forklift fleet maintenance program.

Eyelash Extensions Safety

Is your eyelash extension product FDA approved, hypoalergenic and safe to use? This is a common concern and many manufactures of eyelash extension products make claims to insinuate that their product is FDA approved or hypoallergenic. Some manufacturers claim that their adhesive is "surgical grade" so the technician and client assume that it is safe enough to be used in the medical field. My goal is to address this safety concern and define these common terms used to promote eyelash extension products.

According to the FDA (www.fda.gov) there is no FDA approved eyelash extension product. What else can be said about that? There simply is no specific brand or adhesive that the FDA has approved for safe use on humans for the purpose of eyelash extensions, false eyelashes or individual eyelash semi-permanent applications. There is nothing left to cover of the topic of FDA approval of eyelash extension products and adhesives because it does not exist! Be leery of technicians or manufacturers making these claims, as they are simply not valid.

"Thinking of false eyelashes or extensions?
FDA considers false eyelashes, eyelash extensions, and their adhesives to be cosmetic products, and as such they must adhere to the safety and labeling requirements for cosmetics. False eyelashes and eyelash extensions require adhesives to hold them in place. Remember that the eyelids are delicate, and an allergic reaction, irritation, or other injury in the eye area can be particularly troublesome. Check the ingredients before using these adhesives." Quoted from the FDA web site regarding eyelash extensions. This is all that is mentioned in regards to eyelash extensions.

The claim of being a "hypoallergenic" eyelash extension adhesive is commonly stated on web sites and by manufacturers. Do no assume that this means that you won't have an allergic reaction. According to the FDA this claim means little to nothing in the cosmetic world.

"What are hypoallergenic cosmetics?
Hypoallergenic cosmetics are products that manufacturers claim produce fewer allergic reactions than other cosmetic products. Consumers with hypersensitive skin, and even those with "normal" skin, may be led to believe that these products will be gentler to their skin than non-hypoallergenic cosmetics.
There are no Federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term "hypoallergenic." The term means whatever a particular company wants it to mean. Manufacturers of cosmetics labeled as hypoallergenic are not required to submit substantiation of their hypoallergenicity claims to FDA.
The term "hypoallergenic" may have considerable market value in promoting cosmetic products to consumers on a retail basis, but dermatologists say it has very little meaning."
Source: Excerpted from Hypoallergenic Cosmetics on the FDA web site.

So what does "surgical grade adhesive" actually mean? Well I have researched surgical adhesives available in the United States and compared them to 5 of the most popular eyelash extension adhesives. Cyanoacrylates and commonly used adhesives that have gained FDA approval have little in common as far as actual ingredients are concerned. So I can not explain how the big eyelash extension companies intend to provide evidence that their product is safe due to being "surgical grade". I can't imagine a surgeon reaching for some black eyelash glue in the middle of surgery to glue up tissue on a patient. Eyelash extension adhesive ingredients more resemble Super Glue then most surgical adhesives. In fact some midwives use Super Glue as a surgical adhesive.

The basic truths about the safety of eyelash extensions boils down to common sense. Eyelash extensions are adhered to individual eyelashes with a minimal amount of strong adhesive. When properly applied, no glue or adhesive should come in contact with the skin and this lessens the chance of irritation or allergic reaction. A licensed, experienced professional eyelash extension technician is your best bet for a good and safe application. Do your research and get a referral to a reputable technician that you know others have had good experiences with. An allergic reaction is very rare but possible in all cosmetic applications so its important to know you have a reputable technician who can remove your eyelash extensions if your extensions do not agree with you.

Can Amberen Cause Problems?

Amberen is a natural product designed for menopause relief. In this article I will look at whether or not there are any problems associated with the product and whether or not Amberen is safe to be used.

Amberen's website claims that they have multiple studies which confirm that Amberen is in fact safe. They have even been FDA approved. But does this mean that it is actually safe to be taken in one of the most vulnerable times of our lives? Can this product affect the hormone imbalance even more?

Firstly, it is important to look at what Amberen actually contains. It is mostly made up of succinate salts which work to improve the balance of hormones in the body. There are no chemicals in the box and it is nothing like Hormone Replacement Therapy.

Having said this, some women will find that they experience mild side effects when taking Amberen. Most women complain of headaches at the start which should start to go away after about a week or two. If they don't then you might want to stop taking it.

Fortunately, the side effects don't really get much worse unless you are allergic to one of the ingredients. Some women have reported losing excess weight when taking Amberen but this is only because they have gained additional weight through the symptoms of menopause and are simply returning back to their natural state.

In conclusion, Amberen is a relatively safe product and can be used without many problems. If you are worried, I suggest that you go for a trial and see if it is right for you.

Common accidents in the workplace

Accidents are part of life and seeing as we spend a big chunk of our life in the work place, it seems obvious that a fair few will happen there. But certain types of accidents are more likely to happen in certain environments, for example burning yourself if you work with hazardous substances.
There is no way to stop accidents from happening in the work place completely, but it is a duty of your employer to make sure these risks are at a low level. During this article we will attempt to highlight some of the more common types of accidents.

Trips and Slips
Around a third of all workplace accidents are apparently people slipping up or tripping over things. These slips are usually due to wet conditions and the trips are due to bad housekeeping. Everyone has tripped or slipped in their lifetime and you may be thinking it isn't a big deal, but sometimes they can have quite nasty results. These injuries can be anything from bruised limbs all the way to death if the conditions are bad.
All employers should make sure flooring is safe and secure, cables are kept neat, adequate hand rails are used and most importantly wet surfaces should be clearly marked.

Manual Handling
Another third of workplace accidents are due to manual handling. This is any job activity that incorporates pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying and moving objects. The injuries as a result of these accidents affect the back, arms, tendons and other parts of the body.
To stop these accidents happening, employers should ensure that moving objects should not be over large distances, require twisting, be too heavy and should allow for rest periods.

Traffic Accidents in the Workplace
Many job environment use vehicles, and with these vehicles, comes the danger of accidents. These can be vehicles within warehouses of vehicles coming and go in vehicles. The obvious injury would be, a vehicle hitting you while moving, but they can also involve materials falling from vehicles.
To stop traffic accidents, employers should segregate vehicles and pedestrians with barriers or distance, use one way systems if possible and make sure anyone dealing with vehicles is properly trained.

Whilst these types of accidents can never be predictable, both employees and employers should help themselves to reduce the risk. Common sense can be a life saver in these situations.
