The Organic Farming Philosophy of the NUTRILITE Farms

NUTRILITE is the only global vitamin and mineral brand to grow, harvest and process plants on their own certified organic farms. Wherever NUTRILITE grow the ingredients used in NUTRILITE products, the crops are grown in accordance with nature.

NUTRILITE avoids the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
NUTRILITE replenishes the soil, rather than depleting it.
NUTRILITE uses natural, environmentally-friendly methods to control weeds, insects, and other harmful predators.
A requirement of all the farms supplying botanical materials adhere to the NUTRICERT farm certification program - ensuring that these farms adhere to NUTRILITE's own organic farming philosophy, guided by sustainable, organic principles. The main principles of the NUTRICERT program include:

Crop and vegetation diversity, including vertical diversity of herbs, trees, and bushes; and integration of animal husbandry, beneficial insects, and microorganisms.
Healthy soil-building practices, such as the use of compost, beneficial soil microorganisms, erosion control, and minimal use of mineral fertilizers.
No soil or environmental contamination, such as using genetically modified organisms. The idea is to use integrated pest management and protect the farms from potential sources of contamination from neighboring farms.
In-depth quality control standards, including proper documentation of farm inputs, traceability of crop sources, written plans to avoid contamination and control pests, and a quality assurance program for farm products sold.
Building a healthy social environment around the farm, providing farm employees with the opportunity for personal development, including education and training.
By owning and maintaining control over their own NUTRILITE farms, NUTRILITE can ensure that our supplements contain only high quality ingredients.

NUTRILITE's organic farming operations are truly multinational, with over 6,400 acres in California, Washington State, Mexico, and Brazil.

Agricultural Research Farm - California - USA

NUTRILITE's Agricultural Research Farm in Lakeview, California, is the primary location where NUTRILITE farm researchers work to improve existing NUTRILITE products as well as identify nutrients and active ingredients for new products and the development of organic farming practices.

45 hectares (111 acres)
Located on a prehistoric lake bed, which accumulated nutrient-rich sediment, contributing to the fertile topsoil.
Primary crops: pomegranates, rosemary, and many test crops.
By feeding the soil with compost and by using carefully tested farming practices, NUTRILITE creates a better soil structure - supplying crops with a vast array of nutrients.

At NUTRILITE's Agricultural Research Farm in Lakeview, local volunteers from the community help raise organic vegetables for their own use. In addition, the NUTRILITE Agricultural Research Farm organizes programs with local schools, bringing area students to the farm to grow crops as a school project each year.

Trout Lake Farm - Washington State - USA

Trout Lake Farm is the largest certified organic herb farm in North America. Located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, the farm's irrigation is provided by the White Salmon River, fed by glaciers from the mountains.

283 hectares (700 acres)
The Trout Lake valley where the farm is located is all organic - there is no conventional farming in the valley and the surrounding mountains help keep out pollution and contaminants.
Primary crops: Echinacea purpurea, St. John's wort, horseradish, white kidney beans, dandelions, Echinacea angustifolia, Valerian, peppermint, nettles, and many others.
At Trout Lake Farm, the temperature, sunlight, and moisture levels change from year to year at different altitudes in the valley, so the farm must be carefully managed to ensure consistent yields of its many crops.

The NUTRILITE farm supports many local community projects, including the Trout Lake Fair, the local youth association baseball league, the area arts council, and the local public schools.

Rancho El Petacal - Jalisco - Mexico

Rancho El Petacal, located in southwestern Mexico, has the ideal growing climate with plenty of sunshine and rainfall - the perfect conditions for growing nutrient-rich plants for existing NUTRILITE products, and for growing test plots for research.

All 566 hectares (1,400 acres) are certified 100% organic.
The farm is a major source of jobs for the small community of El Petacal.
Primary crops: lemons, red grapefruit, mandarin oranges, watercress, parsley, spinach, garlic, alfalfa.
NUTRILITE's commitment to sustainability goes beyond the edge of the fields at Rancho El Petacal. NUTRILITE's reforestation programs have helped increase biodiversity and maintain the natural equilibrium of the area.

The NUTRILITE farm at Rancho El Petacal runs a Cultural and Education Support Center at the farm. Here NUTRILITE provides basic education on nutrition and ecology as well as help with local projects, such as building a new church in the community.

Fazenda Nutriorganica - Ubajara - Brazil

Fazenda Nutriorganica is the largest NUTRILITE farm. The farm produces acerola cherries year-round. Over 300 head of cattle on the farm provide natural fertilizer for the crops.

All 1,660 hectares (4,100 acres) are certified 100% organic.
Acerola cherries provide 100% of our need for the natural ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) used in NUTRILITE products.
Primary crops: Acerola cherries, coconuts, passion fruit, guava, and cashews.
Most plant pest and disease problems are solved preventively by providing balanced organic nutrients to ensure strong, healthy growth.
Fazenda Nutriorganica was formerly a desolate, undeveloped tract of land. It is now a beacon of productive work, learning, and professional and personal development. A reforestation project along the banks of the nearby Jaburu River, organized by NUTRILITE, is now underway.

My next article entitled "The NUTRILITE Manufacturing Process Never Compromises on Quality" will show their standards of quality in manufacturing are as much a part of their company culture as their natural farming practices.

Save Your Furniture, Sanity and Your Cat Claws!

New cats and kittens are a fantastic addition to any family. But after you’ve bought the litter tray it’s time to worry about the furniture. You see cat’s love to scratch. They actually need to scratch and if you’re not careful they can quickly ruin your prized furniture. But before you give up hope there are things you can do to protect your furniture without having your cat de-clawed.

You need to encourage your cat to scratch a scratching post rather than your furniture. An understanding of why cats scratch will help us here!!

Cats scratch for many reasons. They scratch as a way to exercise and to tone their muscles. They also scratch as a way to stretch. They have scent glands in their paws so cats scratch to scent and mark their territory. They love to dig their claws into the post, (or your furniture!), not because they want to ruin it but as a way to clean and sharpen their claws. Oh we almost forgot they scratch and claw because it feels sooooooo good!!

So you can see that scratching is a cat’s natural behavior and should be supported and encouraged to keep your cat fit and healthy. If your cat is scratching the furniture you’ll find that physical punishment does not work and will alienate your cat. Sometimes a stern word or a loud clap will stop kitty while you’re there, but what happens when you’re gone?

For a happy cat and a harmonious household with intact furniture the following tips may be of use:

The most important thing you can do is to buy a scratching post BEFORE you get the cat. This way the post will be an integral part of the cat’s environment when it arrives. Once a cat has established a behavior it’s very hard to break.

Ideally buy more than one post and place them in the areas that you think the cat will use most often. At a minimum place one near where the cat will sleep. Cats love to stretch when they wake up – who doesn’t.

Buy a stable post, one that doesn’t wobble and feels very sturdy. Cats really dislike instability and if the post falls over its very unlikely the cat will ever use that post again. Look for a good solid base and the post should feel well made – not flimsy.

Place a post in your main family area. Your cat wants to be part of the family spend time with you. There’s nothing nicer than a cap napping in your lap on a winters day. After a hard hour or so sleeping in your lap its time to stretch. I hope there’s a post nearby or there goes the furniture!

At the outset you will need to encourage the cat to scratch the post. You don’t need to show your cat how to scratch – it already knows!! Try rubbing some cat nip on the post, or tie toys and string on the post. Play with the cat around the post so that it gets used to clawing the post. Trailing wool or string up the spot will encourage clawing and is my favorite method!

Make sure the post is big enough. Your cat should be able to fully stretch on the post, so look at a minimum height of 3 feet. Cats love to dig in their front claws and arch their back to stretch their front legs. This is difficult to do if the post is too short. Beware, if the post is too short then your cat will find out that human furniture is an ideal height!

Play with your cat. Keep it happy and entertained, especially around the posts and it will be less likely to take it out on your furniture!

Finally get a post that is course and can be destroyed. Cat’s love rough surfaces. They will happily pull and tear at their post and enjoy watching it deteriorate. Nylon backed carpet makes an excellent post covering, as is sisal rope. A cat can really get its claws into both these materials. If you currently have a cat which is scratching and clawing the furniture then look for a post made from similar material. If you can’t find the ideal post try making your own.

Disadvantages of Organic Food and Organic Agriculture

Criticism of organic food and organic agriculture includes the following:

Organic food is expensive
Unfortunately, at the moment retailers are charging artificially high prices. I was in Tesco last week which is a rare occurrence as I shop locally where possible, and I nearly died when I saw the prices being charged for organic yogurt and eggs compared to the non-organic brands. I understand that we have to pay more for organic produce because there are more crop failures due to the fact that the farmers cannot use pesticides, but what is an acceptable percentage and does this vary from product to product. Should organic fish be 10 percent more expensive than non organic fish and vegetables 20 per cent etc?

If we have to pay more for crop failures how does this work with processed food that uses less fresh ingredients and higher volumes? Should we still have to pay a premium or are they just jumping on the band wagon and making us pay higher prices? At the moment most organic items are too highly priced to be affordable to most people. Furthermore, many argue that there is not enough evidence that supports the benefits of eating organic food to warrant the additional cost. For example its difficult to quantify; can organic potatoes be 10% better for us, should we then pay an extra 10% on the price? or are we paying for a lifestyle choice? Is this not the same as any branded clothes, toiletries, cars? We could buy cheaper clothes, toiletires or cars as they all do the same as dearer branded ones yet we choose them because it makes us feel better and due to peer pressure and advertising.

Organic Food Safety and Benefits
There is evidence that organic farms are more sustainable and environmentally sound, among other benefits. These claims, however, are subject to dispute and are not settled among scientists.

Another contentious issue surrounding organic produce is the fact that nearly 70 per cent of produce sold in UK supermarkets is imported, generating thousands of food miles to get to its destination and causing damage to the environment.

Often organic food produced in England is sent from one side of the country to the distribution warehouse at the other side, only to be sent back again to the Supermarket. One supermarket has been run a pilot where the farmer and his tractor deliver the organic produce to the supermarket direct. Now that is progress!

Non organic food does contain pesticides of varying amount. Many toxicologists and scientists consider the amount to be so low as to have no effect on the consumer. For example, have you fallen ill the past due to the chemicals in your food? I doubt it! Only those that have an allergic reaction or eat vast quantities of the same food may do so. Food is not allowed to be sold by law that is unsafe.

In todays society, it is virtually impossible to grow produce pestivide free and even organically grown foods do not claim to be completely free of chemical residues. Presticides are carried in the air and rivers. Non GM crops around the world have been found to contain Genetically Modified seedlings as these have been carried in the air from GM farms miles away.

Organic food has "sold out"
Organic food began as a small movement decades ago with gardeners and farmers rejecting the use of conventional non organic practices. With the growth of the Organic food market now outpacing much of the food industry many big companies have moved into this market. With these large often multi national companies, and with the creation of a legal certification framework such as the Soil Assocaiton, there is worry that the very definition of organic food will change from what it used to be and become just another mass produced brand which will over time be replaced by another emerging sector.

For example, Heinz is producing an organic version of baked beans and has different ingredients and packaging, it uses 100% certified organic vine-ripened tomatoes. The label will also reflect an organic quality--with Heinz traditional red label replaced with a green version. Another difference: the organic version will cost about 50% more than regular Heinz. Does certified organic vine-ripened tomatoes cost 50 percent more to buy when bought in bulk, I doubt it!

By keeping it small are we not keeping it beautiful and under control?

A final thought...... Organic is more than just a brand, its a way of life!

CMS and JCAHO Healthcare Security Requirements Summary

Every healthcare organization/hospital accepting payment for Medicare and Medicaid patients is required to meet certain Federal standards called “Conditions of Participation” (CoPs).

These Federal requirements are promulgated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid to improve quality and protect the health and safety of patients. Compliance is based on surveys conducted by state agencies on behalf of the CMS. Conditions of Participation are regulatory standards hospitals agree to follow as a condition for receiving federal funding through the Medicare program.

Under an agreement with CMS, State healthcare licensure agencies conduct surveys of hospitals and enforce compliance with CoPs and ensure that Conditions of Participation are being practiced. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities are subject to random onsite reviews. Unannounced surveys can result from patient or public complaints or inquiries. Healthcare Security is an important element for the new 2006 Conditions of Participation.

CONDITIONS of PARTICIPATION
Department of Health & Human Services
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
(Healthcare Security)
____________________________________________

A-0038

Title 42CFR, Volume 3 - §482.13 Condition of Participation: Patients’ Rights

A hospital must protect and promote each patient’s rights

Interpretive Guidelines §482.13

These requirements apply to all Medicare or Medicaid participating hospitals including short-term, acute care, surgical, specialty, psychiatric, rehabilitation, long-term, childrens’ and cancer, whether or not they are accredited. This rule does not apply to critical access hospitals. (See Social Security Act (the Act) §1861(e)).

These requirements, as well as the other Conditions of Participation in 42 CFR §482, apply to all parts and locations (outpatient services, provider-based entities, inpatient services) of the Medicare participating hospital.

____________________________________________

A-0057

Title 42, Volume 3 CFR - §482.13(c)(2) The patient has the right to receive care in a safe setting.

Interpretive Guidelines for §482.13(c)(2)

The intention of this requirement is to specify that each patient receives care in an environment that a reasonable person would consider to be safe. For example, hospital staff should follow current standards of practice for patient environmental safety, infection control and security. The hospital must protect vulnerable patients, including newborns and children. Additionally, this standard is intended to provide protection for the patient's emotional health and safety as well as his/her physical safety. Respect, dignity and comfort would be components of an emotionally safe environment.

Survey Procedures §482.13(c)(2)

• Review and analyze patient and staff incident and accident reports to identify any incidents or patterns of incidents concerning a safe environment. Expand your review if you suspect a problem with safe environment in the hospitals.

• Review QAPI, safety, infection control and security (or the committee that deals with security issues) committee minutes and reports to determine if the hospital is identifying problems, evaluating those problems and taking steps to ensure a safe patient environment.

• Observe the environment where care and treatment are provided.

• Observe and interview staff at units where infants and children are inpatients. Are appropriate security protections (such as alarms, arm banding systems, etc.) in place? Are they functioning?

• Review policy and procedures on what the facility does to curtail unwanted visitors or contaminated materials.

• Access the hospital's security efforts to protect vulnerable patients including newborns and children. Is the hospital providing appropriate security to protect patients? Are appropriate security mechanisms in place and being followed to protect patients?

Exceptions:

The use of handcuffs or other restrictive devices applied by law enforcement officials who are not employed by or contracted by the hospital is for custody, detention, and public safety reasons, and is not involved in the provision of health care. Therefore, the use of restrictive devices applied by and monitored by law enforcement officers who are not employed or contracted by the hospital, and who maintain custody and direct supervision of their prisoner are not governed by §482.13(f)(l-3). The individual may be the law enforcement officer's prisoner but he/she is also the hospital's patient. The hospital is still responsible for providing safe and appropriate care to their patient. The condition of the patient must be continually assessed, monitored and reevaluate.

JCAHO – 2006
(Healthcare Security)

____________________________________________

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations evaluates and accredits more than 18,000 healthcare organizations and programs throughout the United States. Hospitals aggressively seek Joint Commission accreditation to meet Medicare certification and licensure requirements. Accreditation is also a condition of reimbursement for many insurers and other payers. In addition, JCAHO Accreditation reduces the hospital’s liability insurance premiums. Beginning in 2006 JCAHO will conduct all surveys without prior notice.

The Joint Commission has accredited hospitals for more than 50 years and today accredits over 80 percent of the nation’s hospitals. The Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) have required JCAHO accreditation by US hospitals since 1965 as a ‘Condition of Participation’ requirement in order for them to receive Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements.

The Joint Commission and Healthcare Security

The Joint Commission’s Standards address the hospital’s performance in specific areas, and specify requirements to insure that patients are provided a safe and secure environment. 2006 Environment of Care© requirements include, but are not limited to the following:

• Development and maintenance of a written Security Management Plan to include an Emergency Management Plan.

• Conduct an annual Risk Assessment that evaluates the potential adverse impact of the external environment on the security of patients, staff, and others coming to the facility.

• Use the risks identified to select and implement procedures and controls to achieve the lowest potential for adverse impact on security.

• Identify, as appropriate, patients, staff and other people entering the facility.

• Access Control / Physical Protection – control access to and egress from security sensitive areas, as determined by the organization.

• Mitigate Violence in the Emergency Department and other locations.

• Education and Training – staff, licensed practitioners, and volunteers have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their responsibilities within the environment.

• Develop and implement a proactive infant abduction prevention plan.

• Include information on visitor/provider identification as well as identification of potential abductors/abduction situations (during staff orientation and in-service curriculum programs).

• Enhance parent education concerning abduction risks and parent responsibility for reducing risk and then assess the parents' level of understanding.

• Attach secure identically numbered bands to the baby (wrist and ankle bands), mother, and father or significant other immediately after birth.

• Footprint the baby, take a color photograph of the baby and record the baby's physical examination within two hours of birth.

• Require staff to wear up-to-date, conspicuous, color photograph identification badges.

• Discontinue publication of birth notices in local newspapers.

• Consider options for controlling access to nursery/postpartum unit such as swipe-card locks, keypad locks, entry point alarms or video surveillance (any locking systems must comply with fire codes).

• Consider implementing an infant security tag or abduction alarm system.

Management Tips for Office Managers

In today's high-paced, competitive workforce an effective office manager is key to successful business operation. As an effective office manager you need to understand your role, and your key objectives.

The key responsibility of any office manager is to ensure the smooth operation of day-to-day business. There are three levels required to accomplish any large task (like running an office)

1. Strategic Planning and Monitoring
2. Tactical Planning and Monitoring
3. Execution of the Plan

An Office Manager is a tactical manager. As a tactical manager you normally have the following key responsibilities.

1. Understand the strategic plan. This is harder than it sounds. It is not always easy to get a clear vision of your objectives from your leadership team. Keep asking for it until you get it, and accept and understand that you may never get a clear answer on this. Ask how your performance will be measured. If you can't get a straight answer on the objectives, you can often figure them out by what you are being measured on. Strategic planners measure their staff on things that reflect what they want done. Your real objective is to meet not just the measurements, but also to meet the intent of the measurements.

2. Communicate your objectives. Start by writing down your best interpretation of what you think you are supposed to accomplish. Always pick 2 or 3 key objectives for the year. Communicate them to your boss (this is what I'm planning to do, tell me if you want any changes) Communicate them to your team. Don't wait for your boss's approval (unless additional spending is required).Start. If your boss disagrees, then make the necessary course corrections. Show some initiative. This is your team. If you're struggling with where to start suggest looking at ways to reduce office costs and ways to improve making accurate time estimates and meeting them. The main thing is that you put together a plan and show that you have an organized direction. Tactical managers must be able to organize details and turn objectives into plans.

3. Motivate your team. Tell them what the objectives are. Tell them what they will be evaluated on. Ask them for ideas on how to accomplish the objectives. Listen to them. Whenever possible give people credit for their ideas. Whatever you do, don't try to keep all the planning to yourself. The more you modify your plans with the ideas of your team, the more cooperation you will get in achieving them.

4. Monitor progress, communicate progress and deviations, and make course corrections. Your leaders want measurements. It's the only way they know something is happening.

Understand the strategic plan, communicate your objectives, motivate your team and measure your progress.

Safety First with Tools

Humans have been using hand tools since prehistoric times. The evolution from the primitive Stone Age tools to sophisticatedly engineered tools has changed the way we perform work today. Hand and power tools are used daily to help perform tasks that otherwise would be difficult or impossible. However, the advances in tools have also created new challenges for their users. Even simple tools pose great hazards, and can cause severe injuries if not used or maintained properly. In order to reduce or eliminate these hazards, OSHA recommends that special attention should be paid toward hand and power tool safety. In this article, some basic precautions are discussed that can prevent common injuries caused by hand and power tools.

Hand Tool Hazards and Protection

Usually, hand and power tool hazards are caused through misuse and improper maintenance. You should remember the following when handling such tools:

Do not use wrenches when their jaws are sprung;

Never use impact tools, such as chisels and wedges, when their heads have mushroomed;

Tools with loose, cracked or splintered handles should never be used

You must never use a screwdriver as a chisel;

Tools with taped handles should be checked first for any hidden cracks;

Use Personal Protective Equipment, such as safety goggles and gloves;

Keep floor surface where working free from debris and tripping or slipping hazards;

Keep cutting tools sharp.

Power Tool Hazards and Precautions

Power tools could be extremely hazardous when used improperly. They must always be fitted with guards and safety switches. Here are some precautions you should take while handling such tools:

Remember to disconnect all tools when they are not in use and also when their accessories are changed;

Before servicing and cleaning all tools must be disconnected from the power source;

People that are not involved with the work must be kept away from the work;

Never hold the switch button while carrying a plugged-in tool;

Before starting to work, make sure both your hands are free to operate the tool. You can do this by securing your work with clamps or a vice;

Do not wear loose clothing and jewelry that can get caught in moving parts;

Damaged electric tools must be removed and tagged with the words: “Do Not Use”;

Portable tools should never be carried by their cord;

Electric cords must not be used to hoist or lower tools;

All cords and hoses must be kept away from oil, heat and sharp edges at all times.

Remember, it can only take one mistake! So be sensible and stay safe.

Divert Those Thieves with a Diversion Safe

The United States Bureau of Justice indicates that although property crime rates are declining, slightly more than 75% of all crime in the USA is property crime. With these kinds of statistics, diversion safes are for the smart at heart. Sure, those old-fashioned safes can be hidden behind paintings like in the movies, or they can be hidden in closets or under beds. Another option is spending money to get a safe deposit box at a bank. A great and inexpensive way of keeping your valuables and money safe within your home is a diversion safe.

Diversion safes work because they don’t look like safes. They actually look like anything but a safe, and divert attention away from your precious treasure. Diversion safes are made to look like a soda can, a jar of peanut butter, a book on your shelf, a cleaning product, or a can of hairspray. Others are designed to be built into your wall like an electrical outlet, but instead of plugging your lamp into them, you can stash your spare cash in this diversion safe. Diversion safes meant to be used outside of your home include the always popular fake rock, and even a flower pot. These safes look and feel just like the real product they represent.

Diversion safes work because home invaders don’t have time to check every can of soda in your fridge, or search through your cupboard for the fake can of peanut butter. If a home invader only spends 8 minutes in your home, they are probably not going straight to your cupboard to check out your cleaning products! Instead, they go right to the real safe and see if they can get it open. Or look through standard places, like your dresser drawers. Plus, you can scatter these safes all throughout your house, keeping your valuables in a variety of secure diversion safes.

The beauty of these diversion safes is that you don’t really have to hide your valuables. You stick them in the diversion safe, and then you can put that right out in the open of your home. As always, you want to be sensible with your family fortune. For instance, you’ll want to stick your diversion safe shaped like a can in your fridge, as you would a can of real soda. And the diversion safe shaped like a book, should go on the book shelf with all the other best sellers, romance novels, and murder mysteries.

Another huge bonus of diversion safes is the fact that they are generally inexpensive, unlike real safes, which can run hundreds and even thousands of dollars. These handy safes can cost as little as $10 or $15! That’s quite a bargain considering the enormous protection they provide you and your family.

Telephone systems play a very important role in the modern workplace.

Telephone systems play a very important role in the modern workplace. Telephone systems give individuals the ability to communicate and share information. During the early years of telephones, there was a limited amount of functions that could be used. In the modern workplace, there are many more functions that telephone systems are capable of. Multi-user calls, or conference calls, are now fairly standard. VOIP telephone service provides the cost saving solutions which are very helpful for making international calls at a much lower rate as compared to the other modes of communication. Used in various communications needs and requirements, VOIP telephones are very common. Many Voip handsets are available in the market. Telephone exchanges then operated under the licensed name of the Bell Telephone Company. Telephone systems are more complex and have more advanced features than the phones typically used for personal communication. Although they resemble the telephones that can be found in everyone's home, office telephone systems deliver considerably more performance for business operations. The operational requirements and the budgetary needs are specific to each company and corporation.

The telephone is probably the most important and the most used method of communication today. Telephone systems are widely available. The variety of equipment available enables each company or corporation to choose the exact telephone system that is most appropriate to their specific needs. Due to technological advancement, the range of telephone systems to choose from is now very wide. This is where advanced communication-technology providers such as Wizard Communications come into the picture.
