Saving & Storing Your Christmas Cookies

Baking cookies is a favorite activity during the holiday season. The smell of the cookies baking, the warmth of the oven, the joy when you see the results, and of course, the taste! Here are some tips for saving and storing your cookies:

Preparing

Make sure your cookies are completely cool before preparing them for storage or freezing. Any frosting or icing should also be fully set and firm.

Storing

Cookies should be stored in an airtight container or bag. Some cookies will keep better if individually wrapped, such as very large gourmet type cookies, large cutout and frosted cookies and very thick cookies. Plastic wrap, foil or waxed paper works well for individually wrapping the cookies.

Freezing

Just about any type of cookie will freeze well and can last for up to 1 year from when you baked them. Make sure the cookies are wrapped well in waxed paper, plastic wrap or foil. Wrap them individually to make them last longer, hold their shape better and preserve their taste and texture. Then put them in an airtight container like a Tupperware or other container. You can also use a Ziploc freezer bag, just make sure you have sealed it tightly. Cookies that have been frosted will only keep for a few months in the freezer.

Using Frozen Cookies

Unwrap the cookies carefully and let them thaw completely and come to room temperature before serving. You can also microwave them on high for about 20-30 seconds.

Freezing Cookie Dough

Many people don't realize that you can freeze the actual cookie dough for up to 1 month. Then thaw it out completely before preparing to bake. This can save alot of time during the holiday season and give you the same fresh from the oven taste as fresh baked cookies. Cookie dough that is very, very soft should not be frozen. Any dough that is firm will freeze very well. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place in an airtight container or freezer bag.

When storing or freezing dough or baked cookies, don't forget to write the date and type of cookies on the package.

Pros and Cons of Rechargeable and Non-Rechargeable Batteries

Batteries ultimately come in two categories: non-rechargeable and rechargeable. Also known as primary and secondary batteries, each type offers its own set of advantages and drawbacks.

The primary, or non-rechargeable, battery is most often used in small, portable devices that do not require a great deal of power. Such devices include radios, toys, and flashlights, to name a few. Convenience is a major selling point of these batteries. They require no preparation, being ready to use upon purchase. Another advantage of primary batteries is that they are usually cheap, and have a high energy density.

That said, primary batteries also suffer from some shortcomings. The most severe problem is the waste caused by primary batteries. Because the average household goes through so many, it is easy for waste to accumulate. When disposed through normal means, some primary batteries (like button batteries) can pollute the environment with corrosive materials and heavy metals. These primary batteries require special means of disposal, the nature of which varies from place to place. Batteries can sometimes be recycled, but this is not always an available option.

Secondary batteries, also known as rechargeable batteries, provide an alternate option. Secondary batteries are often used for electronic items that demand more power. Phones and power tools are all examples of products that rely on secondary batteries. The increasingly ubiquitous laptop battery is another example of this. As their name suggests, these batteries can be reused. This makes up for the increased cost and decreases wastage.

Secondary batteries also suffer from some drawbacks. One of these is preparation: they often need charging, even before the first use. Another problem is the secondary battery's lack of versatility. While a primary battery can often be used with a wide range of products, secondary batteries are rarely interchangeable. The proper disposal of rechargeable batteries presents another problem. Secondary batteries are usually classified as hazardous wastes. Fortunately, they last much longer than primary batteries.

Many different components go into the manufacture of batteries. These materials aren't necessarily exclusive to one type of battery. Alkaline batteries are an example of this, as they are usually associated with primary batteries, but are sometimes used as secondary batteries. The materials can have a major impact on the use and benefits of a battery.

Primary and secondary batteries both play important roles. Because of this, battery outlets usually carry both varieties. Many people now choose to buy from online battery retailers, which offer a wide variety at a low price.

------

Rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries are designed for different purposes. The rechargeable variety is most often used with the more power-hungry devices. A laptop battery is one example of this. Non-rechargeable batteries typically go with smaller devices.

Constructive Termination and Unlawful Discharge

Before terminating or laying off workers, employers should know all the laws about termination to avoid lengthy court litigation and costly settlement which may amount to thousands or even millions of dollars.

In other cases, some employers make the working condition for employees intolerable to force them to resign. However, doing so is considered illegal and employers may face a lawsuit based on constructive discharge.

One example of constructive discharge involved a woman who has complained that a worker was harassing her. But instead of pursuing the case, she was forced to resign because her employer was giving her extra tasks with a purpose to make the working environment intolerable for her.

In the example stated above, the employer did not directly discharge her but he may still face lawsuit because she has not been willing to resign (the condition just forced her to do so).

In most cases, constructive discharge also involves demotion, public humiliation, and oral defamation which make the working environment more unbearable.

According to lawyers, victims of constructive discharge can file claims to recover economic damages (e.g. loss of wages) and non-economic damages (e.g. emotional anguish).

Meanwhile, workers should prove all the factors stated below to support their claims:

• The employer has recently changed the working condition of a worker, forcing him or her to resign.

• The change of working condition is intolerable that any reasonable person will be forced to quit his or her job.

• The employer has intentionally committed or allowed the intolerable changes.

• The time of resignation and the change in working condition happened closed in time. This is important to establish a cause and effect relation between these two factors.

Some petty changes such as placing a worker's office in a cubicle farther from the lounge area is not considered as a ground for constructive discharge. According to lawyers, changes should be extraordinary and intolerable to consider these unlawful. So when the changes in working condition can be tolerated by other workers, it only means that an employer has not violated any law.

At-will Employment

Many US companies follow at-will employment which is a contract that allows workers to quit any time they want and employers to terminate anyone without giving valid reasons. However, having this contract will not protect employers from unlawful termination lawsuit.

Even if at-will employment gives employers the right to terminate a worker without valid reasons, they can be sued if the termination has violated public policy such as:

• Terminating an employee for practicing his statutory rights such as filing a worker's compensation, taking medical leave, and filing a lawsuit against his employer.

• Terminating a worker because of his nationality, race, color, sexual orientation, gender, disability, age, and religion.

• Firing an employee for refusing to commit any unlawful act such as tax evasion and giving false statement in a court.

• Discharging a worker who is a whistle-blower.

• Firing a worker for practicing his legal obligation such as serving in a jury and testifying in courts.

What Type of Formula Milk to Use?

Choosing to bottle feed your baby can be a hard decision to make. You need to think deeply about why you believe it's best to bottle feed rather than breastfeed your child. Having made your decision to bottle feed, you should also think about the type of formula milk that's best for your baby.

Formula milk comes in 3 forms: ready-made, concentrate and powder. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Ready made milk formula is the easiest to use; all you need to do is open the container and feed your baby its contents. The main disadvantage with ready-made formula is it is the most expensive option, so if you're trying to save pennies it may not be the best choice. Formula concentrate is cheaper than ready-made, but you do have to add boiled water. The cheapest and most widely used form of formula milk is powdered formula. As well as having the advantage of being cheap, it is also the easiest to store. Both ready-made and concentrate need to be stored in the fridge whereas you only need to stored formula made from powder, after it has been mixed with water.

As you'll soon discover, you need to be prepared when you travel with your baby. You need to take along everything you need to prepare your child's formula. If you're planning on staying somewhere away from home, you need to think about: will where you're staying have a fridge? Will it have facilities to provide you with boiled water if you're using concentrate or powder? What about cleaning facilities? Can you plug in your bottle sterilizer? Even if you are using concentrate or powder (and trying to save pennies) I would strongly recommend buying some ready-made baby formula and keeping it stored in the fridge. You can then use it as a standby for when you need to make a trip out somewhere.

As well as coming in three forms, baby formula comes in different types: the main ones being cow's milk and soybean. In addition to these basic formula types, you can also find lactose free formula, formula supplemented with DHA and ARA, and formula for preemies.

By far the most popular and probably the best for your child is baby formula made from cow's milk. Choosing the right brand is a personal choice. All brands now sold in Western countries will meet their government's guidelines. However, different brands will contain different levels of sugar and protein. All baby milk formulas are fortified with iron and Vitamin D (these can be lacking in breast milk) and contain lactose (milk sugar). Brands such as Similac Advance, Enfamil Lipil, and Nestle Good Start Supreme are made with lactose and cow's milk based proteins.

Soy based formula is now becoming more popular. Unlike cow's milk it does not contain lactose. If your child has lactose intolerance then soy formula milk may be right for your child. Brands include Enfamil ProSobee, Similac Isomil, and Nestle Good Start Supreme Soy. There has been some controversy as to whether soy protein can cause long term health implications to babies who are fed soy-based formula. However, a recent study, led by Dr Brian L. Strom from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, showed no difference in the long-term health effects of soy infant formula and those based on cow's milk. But if you have any doubts then stick with baby formula milk that is made from cow's milk.
Goat's milk is gaining in popularity and some feel it is better for baby and the environment. Using goat's milk is probably fine; however, goat's milk does only contain around 10% of the folic acid that is found in cow's milk. So, if you are planning to use goat's milk, find a brand that has been fortified with folic acid. On the plus side, goat's milk formula does contain far higher levels of copper and antioxidant selenium. Some also believe that babies have a lactose intolerance will do better by switching from cow's to goat's milk. Whilst it is true that Goats milk does contain lower levels of lactose, if your child is lactose-intolerant then you are probably best switching to soy based formula or a lactose free formula of cow's milk.

Lactose free formulas, such as Lactofree and Similac Lactose free are made without lactose, but do have cow's milk proteins in them. Babies are not usually thought to be born with lactose intolerance, so these formulas are usually not needed. If your child is experiencing problems with cow's formula, seek professional advice before switching to a lactose free formula or soy-based formula.
Other infant formulas include Enfamil AR (anti regurgitation), which is thought to be helpful for infants with reflux and premature formulas, such as Similac Special Care and Enfamil Premature. Again, you probably should never need to buy this type of formula as your baby's reflux is probably being caused by something else. Again, speak to your doctor before switching to this type of formula.
Very recently, new infant formulas have been introduced that are supplemented with DHA and ARA, which are found in breast milk and are thought to help with an baby's development. Brands of these supplemented formula include Enfamil Lipil, Similac Advance, and Nestle Good Start Supreme DHA & ARA. Talk to your doctor about these and what benefits, if any, they could offer your child.
Having read the above it is hoped that choosing the best baby milk formula for your child has been made easier. If you have any doubts or further questions talk to your paediatrician, they will be able to give you more information about all aspects of bottle-feeding your baby.

There are many important features of vacation. It is not an option but a compulsory measure that has to be taken while traveling anywhere whether it is your own country or whether it is abroad.

To have an uninterrupted vacation you need to keep a count of the things you should be careful of. Especially children being sensitive you have to take extra care when it comes to children.

Some of the things you should be careful of is knowing what can causes allergic reactions, taking extra care if you have undergone any operation, making sure you carry your medicines as prescribed by your doctor.

Having a First Aid tool kit is a must have on a trip or a vacation, Some of the medications are prescribed skin creams, pills, bandages, wound cleansing lotion, lots of Cotton, carrying hot water bottle, carrying your own medicines that are prescribed by Doctor, if at all you get allergic to anything, you know what to do!

Now, a First Aid tool kit is not the only precaution that you need to take, wherever you go, you have to be very watchful and protective of your family, avoid places that are vulnerable and can make you a victim. Keep your valuables intact on you, so that you are not a victim of robbery. Make sure that you do carry something to protect yourself from maniacs. And one of the recommendations will be eye spray. Eye spray will not harm the person completely but at least make him or her aware that you can defend yourself.

When traveling with children, children get excited when going on vacation so make sure that they do not put themselves in vulnerable situations where it would be hard for them to come out of.

Avoid legal difficulties; you should follow the law no matter what. There are families who have gone on vacations and have broken the law of where ever they have been and had to pay a great deal for it. So make sure you follow the legalities of where ever you are.

Terrorism is spoken of nowadays, make sure that you stick to your own family and just be friends with those people in the vacation that you feel you are confident of.

Safety Harhess How to wear a safety harness correctly when working at height

How To Wearing a Full Body Harness Correctly When Working at height

There is so much more to wearing a full body harness to work than simply throwing it on and hoping for the best.

Every type of full body harness has to be worn in the same way, whether it is standard polyester non elasticised webbing, or elasticised harnesses. There are a number of points on the harness you need to be aware of.

On the rear of the harness is the Dorsal Plate, this could be rubber, plastic or form part of the harness webbing pattern. This piece is extremely important as it prevents the "D" ring from slamming into the back of your head in fall and converting the harness in a noose. The "D" ring connects your harness to the anchorage point via intermediate attachments. Some harness have an adjustment for height via buckles on shoulder straps, the simplest rule for this type of harness is that you should not be able to touch the Dorsal Plate by reaching from behind your head or by reaching up from the lumber or lower back region. Modern harness design has taken this feature out of the system to reduce miss-use of the harness, this type of harness may be elasticised to encourage correct fitting and for the users comfort.

On the front of the harness should be a chest strap, some harnesses have a metal buckle and possibly a "D" ring on the front. This is to provide the user with a way of attaching to an anchor or safe system of work, for example ladder systems. The important thing to note with type of attachment that unless the harness is worn correctly there is a risk the "D" ring and buckle can strike the user in the neck and under the chin if you are involved in a fall.

Some harness designs have replaced this with soft loops as a front connection as this feature makes the harness safer for the user

The chest strap, without a front attachment is much smaller and made of softer webbing, the chest strap is there to stop the shoulder straps from parting and allowing the user to fall out the front of their harness.

However in both cases it is important to take care when attaching your safety equipment in relation to the "D" ring. If the anchorage point is behind you then use the rear "D" ring and vice versa if the anchor point is in front of you.

Once you have put the harness on, like a jacket, and adjusted the chest strap to so it is tight but comfortable, we need address the leg straps, buckles and sliders, there is more to it than just stepping into harness.

Stepping into a commercial full body harness is considered to be extremely bad practice. Not only does it increase the risk of slips trips and falls; if the harness is placed on the ground it could pick up all kinds of dirt and contamination. There is also a risk of complacency setting in; where the user steps into the harness in a rush and fails to adjust it appropriately. In a fall a slack harness can lead to death or worse, extreme testicular trauma and severe rectal damage.

The easiest way to gage the correct tension of the leg straps is to tighten it until you can just about get 2 fingers between the webbing and your leg. Two finger tension means placing the middle and index finger perpendicular to the webbing around the front area of the leg.

The final thing and probably the most important thing is to lock your harness, every harness with a buckle used for adjustment should have at least one slider to lock it. If the harness is not locked and you are involved in a fall the movment of the webbing through the buckle can cause the bar tack to shock load against it. The bar tack is rolled over and lightly stitched it is only there to keep the sliders and buckles on the harness. The energy, in a fall, may exceed the strength of this stitching and it will rip apart allowing the bar tack to unroll and pass through the buckle. The end result is that you will fall through the bottom of the harness

It doesn't matter how good your harness is or how correctly you are wearing it unless it is inspected on a regular basis it will offer you no protection what so ever.

The most important part of the harness is the webbing, so check the webbing for any signs of abrasion; look at the edges of the webbing, a 1mm cut in either edge of the webbing will cause the webbing to fail.

From there it is a simple task of looking at and feeling all the component parts of the harness. If there is any sign of wear and tear or damage then do not use the harness. It should be quarantined and removed from service and passed to your line manager so it can be recorded and destroyed inline with the Equipment Inspection Policy.

The article is not intended to be used as Primary Training; instead it is a reminder to those who have been trained

Safety harnesses need to be worn correctly to prevent serious injury

Work site projects and trades require workers to be trained to achieve a high standard of competence in order to work safely at height. In depth knowledge of the equipment and safety concerns can not only improve an operator's confidence and efficiency but will also save lives and prevent serious injuries.

Garage Door Safety Beams: How Do They Work?

One of the most important inventions of the last few years has been the advent of the safety beam. The safety beam is a beam of infrared light that sits near the floor of your garage. If something is in the way or if something breaks the beam as your door is closing, the sensor will automatically make the door rise back up. It is basic motion sensor detection technology that, thanks to military research, has come down in price considerably from where it was just a decade ago. Let's take a look at why these beams are so important.

Along with high quality insulation and a durable opening mechanism, the safety beam is definitely one of the most important inventions in garage door history. The idea of someone being crushed under a 400 lb. door has become such a part of modern culture that even the popular television show, The Simpsons, had it happen to clumsy main character Homer Simpson. Of course, for thousands of families across the country, the idea of being crushed to death by your garage door is no laughing matter. According to a 1991 press release by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 46 confirmed deaths from 1982-1990 involving children and garage doors. It was this call by the CPSC and other groups that brought the use of the safety beam into today's homes. Best of all, the addition of safety beams has not significantly increased the cost of garage doors, which makes this addition something everyone can agree on. The beams help protect you and your family from accidents, slips, falls, and disasters. They also protect the garage door companies from being sued by families that have experienced such accidents.

If you have chosen to install your own garage door at home, the safety beam is one of the easiest parts to install. You can purchase a garage door set that includes a safety beam or you can purchase the beams on their own for anywhere from $150-$200. If you aren't sure how to install or retrofit your garage doors with safety beams, you may want to call a professional to do the installation for you. Many of the best safety beams on the market are made by the same manufacturers that make the doors, so you won't have to worry about compatibility problems. If you have a significantly older garage door, however, you may want to consider calling your manufacturer before you go out and invest the money in safety beams.

The safety beam is a basic motion detector. The units transmit a beam from one end to the other that, when broken, serves as an effective safety device. When you close your garage door, the censor in the safety beam allows the door to continue closing as long as the beam remains unbroken. Should a person, pet, or even a piece of paper happen to break the beam, the door will immediately begin to open. It is a long overdue safety feature that works like a charm and can saves lives.

Complete Guide to Mechanical Hazards and Workplace Health

Working in a place that is risky to one?s health and even life is not a place anyone would really want to spend one third of their lives in. Of course there is such a thing as occupational hazard, but unnecessary risks whether included in occupational hazards or not, should still be addressed by company workplace health programs. Programs implemented for these are not a waste of money as most of the time the investment can be recouped after a few years.

A basic practice of workplace health programs is making sure the working environment is free from any potential hazardous object. A workplace can become dangerous once there are various dangerous items around. Although there are an infinite number of hazards, it can also be classified into mechanical, biological and chemical.

Ropes, wires and even plastic wraps are all mechanical hazards that could entangle and choke a person to death. While some of these may seem minor, more serious ones can be of major concern and can even be fatal. Mechanical hazards are fairly easy to spot so company should not have a hard time preventing these from tarnishing workplace health record.

Placing conspicuous signs along paths known to cause a lot of accidents helps. Illuminating paths when it is dark also helps to avoid trips and falls due to unseen objects. All these when put together can drastically reduce mechanical workplace health hazards at work.

There isn?t anything in this world that is not considered a chemical. Chemicals can be very inert, meaning non reactive like certain gases, and can be very reactive like certain compounds. It is hard to say what the actual workplace health risks are for each chemical as it varies widely for each.

Material safety Data Sheets are pieces of documents that are usually included with the purchase of any chemical and this can easily be used to manage the chemicals risks on workplace health. MSDS are a great resource to keep in reach and near the chemicals. Moreover, companies should educate their employees first and foremost on the proper handling and storage procedure of each chemical.

Before you even completely read through this article new forms of viruses and bacteria have mutated from their old counterparts and these are just a few of the real risks associated with biological hazards. Even if you?re in the arctic, the desert or your cubicle, biological workplace health hazards exists. Pathogens, viruses and diseases can travel and be transmitted quickly and easily, thereby making the world their playground.

Having employees who are knowledgeable about the do?s and don?ts of proper health practices can make a world of difference. Making sure to wash hands after using the toilet, cover mouth when one is sneezing are ways to keep diseases at bay and away from contaminating workplace health. Employers should also make it a point to make sure employees take regular physical examinations to detect diseases early on.

Educating employees of the possible risks in the workplace is more important than trying to eliminate all these risks. Whether mechanical, chemical or biological, employees will be able to identify possible risks and prevent accidents from happening. Workplace health starts and ends with each and every one of us.

Printing Equipment Safety Guidelines

Thirty percent of reported accidents are manual handling accidents. These accidents include transporting and supporting of loads, awkward positioning, and unstable materials that are difficult to hold. It rarely results to death, but accidents like this can end up to major injuries such as fractured back or arm. It also results to damage and loss of construction materials.

Back sprain or strain, which can lead to chronic conditions, is the most common injury. Others include muscular spasms and strains, abrasions and cuts.

In 1974, the Health and safety at Work act was implemented and required employers to apply safety measures. And because of the increasing risk of injury, the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 was imposed and pointed out that if employers cannot eliminate manual lifting they must at least find a way to reduce it. These accidents were also investigated.

The elimination of risk of such accident lies in the employers and manual handling risk assessment tools.

The directors should take the responsibility of training and educating his subordinates, as well as appointing people to take care of a certain area. Employers should comply with the guidance on regulations regarding manual handling operations. This regulation was revised to update workers and employers with the improvements of knowledge and avoidance of risk of injuries.

To assess manual handling risks, certain tools were developed and factors were considered. These factors include tasks, worker, load and environment. Assessment should be comprehensive and consistent.

Some heavy equipments and tools are advisable because it is safer and can decrease the company’s cost due to accidents. Sites or workplace must be well lit and clean. It should be free from waste, hazardous materials and obstructions. Everybody should observe good housekeeping. Performance and safety kits and devices should be well monitored. Everyone must comply with the control measures and all activities should be carefully planned.

There is also the Manual Handling Assessment Chart (MAC) Tool, which was developed so that workers will be able to identify high risk workplace. Also, this tool is designed to assess the risk factors caused by lifting, carrying and team handling activities. It aims to help workers and employers to interpret and understand the risks, and to categories them according to certain levels.

Manual handling accidents not only cause physical damages to human, it can also cause loss of money, work delays and risks the reputation of the company. A complete application of safety rules and good management will result to effective and productive work environment.

Vehicle Safety Habits For The Beginner Driver

It is good practice to check you’re vehicle out before proceeding out on the road, and know all the safety features of the vehicle that you are operating. It is part of defensive driving to do these checks before you take you’re vehicle on the road.

Vehicle inspection should be first on the list, before proceeding out on the road.

Take out the tire wrench. You are going to need it to check the tires. Hit the tire to make sure there is sufficient air. You may want to carry a tire gauge in you’re car. Do a visable inspection of tires, looking for possible cracks or worn tires.

Are there any visible leaks under the car? Do the signals work? Do the headlights work? (High and low beam.) Do the brake lights work?

Check to make sure there’s enough engine oil; break fluid, and power steering fluid. Also check battery water level and coolant level. Do not open radiator cap! Vehicle must be cooled down first, if parked recently. (caution: see owners manual before opening cap.) Last will be transmission fluid. (Vehicle must be running to read proper level.) (Make sure you’re emergency park brake is applied.)

Now you are ready to enter the car. Go over the safety features of your vehicle. .

Communication features:

  • Signals help you warn other drivers, which way you intend to turn.
  • Brakes warn other drivers your slowing down or stopping.
  • Horn warns other drivers and pedestrians to be alert.
  • Emergency signals warn other drivers of a problem that you may have.

Visibility features:

  • Mirrors should be adjusted before you leave any parked position.
  • Mirrors should be used quite often to see what is happening around you at all times. When you think your going to have to stop, check you’re rearview mirror first. You may have to touch your brake, to warn others behind you. You may have to stop a little further ahead to give the driver behind you room to stop safely. It’s all part of driving defensively.
  • Headlights should be working, high and low beam.
  • Wipers are a must in bad weather conditions.
  • Windshield must be clean.

Safety features:

  • Emergency brakes should be applied when in a parked position at all times. Test you’re emergency brake by applying the handle, or pushing to the floor, depending on the make and model of the vehicle. Remove gear out of park position with foot on brake pedal and put in drive position. Ease up on brake pedal. Vehicle should not roll forward. It is a good habit to always release park brake after putting vehicle in gear. The vehicle will not roll forward if you forget to put you’re foot on the brake pedal, if the park brake is functioning properly.
  • Seat belts: Make sure you’re seatbelt is on. Including passengers. It is a violation in most, if not every city and state not to wear it.

Comfort:

  • Heater should be adjusted accordingly, for maximum comfort. Driver must open windows if too hot.
  • Seat adjustments should be adjusted for maximum visibility and comfort.

(Check owner’s manual for further knowledge of vehicle features and safety features.)

These topics that we covered should be second nature when reaching for them, especially when you get an unexpected downpour, or hit with mud from a passing vehicle, if you have to look for you’re wipers, you may find yourself on top of another vehicle or in a ditch! Do not attempt to drive without this knowledge.
