Temporary soundproofing. American Sound Blankets

There are many people who need a temporary soundproofing solution. The need something that can be placed on a wall, or across doorway or even over a window but be completely removable at a moments notice. One of the best temporary soundproofing materials are American Sound Blankets, which are sold exclusively through Soundproofing America Inc.

These sound blankets consist of a 1 lb or 2 lb mass loaded vinyl core with 1" of fiberglass batting on both sides and finally an aluminized fabric covering. Most likely this covering is a nylon-based material that is quilted over top of the Sound Blanket. These sound blankets are very effective in industrial applications where soundproofing is needed around loud machinery. However, they are also used in many residential and commercial applications.

The Sound Blankets can give you the soundproofing you need in an apartment application where you cannot make permanent changes to the walls and ceilings or to door and window openings. The Sound Blankets have grommets at the top where the blanket can be hung with use of 'J' hooks from a ceiling or wall.

We have had customers build a complete music sound studio using on these blankets as soundproofing. They are very versatile and offer the customer the ability to soundproof a wall or a doorway but do so in a non-permanent manner.

American sound blankets have also been used to partition off larger rooms to separate them and allow multiple activities to take place in both rooms without either room disturbing the other.

Today's sound blankets are much more effective than blankets used in the past. The combination of both sound blocking and sound absorbing materials make for a very effective soundproofing material. The best thing about the sound blankets is that they are completely portable and go where you go.

The American Sound Blankets can also be used in Hospital and most medical applications. They are easy to clean and sanitize and work well in any clean room or anti bacterial environment.

The Sound Blankets can be used effectively in computer server rooms to quell the high-pitched hum of today's modern sever systems. The sound blankets offer a low cost solution for the constant noise that emanates from most computer server rooms. The sound blanket can be used effectively in any area where sound is an issue.

The American Sound Blankets have also been used in Law Enforcement interrogation rooms to keep these areas private and to protect the rights of the people in these secure areas.

The use of the Sound Blankets is virtually endless and the best part is that the Blankets can be taken wherever they are needed. Portable soundproofing is becoming essential in today's on the move world. Basic Principles of Solar Panels and Power

Solar power and solar panels are getting a lot of attention as part of the solution to our energy crisis. Solar energy, also called photovoltaic energy, is undergoing rapid changes thanks to massive investment in research and development. This article will discuss the basic makeup of photovoltaics in hopefully easy-to-understand terms.

Solar Cells

A solar panel is made of several photovoltaic cells. The cells are very thin, about 1/100th of an inch thick and usually 3 to 4 inches square. These cells convert sunlight to energy by the photovoltaic effect (we will discuss this effect in detail in a later article). These cells do not require fuel and have a standard lifetime of 20-30 years.

Solar Panels & Modules

Photovoltaic (PV) cells are assembled together to create a solar module. The module is what you are used to seeing as a panel. It has anywhere from 2 to 200 cells assembled together, encased in tempered glass and aluminum to make them weather resistant.

Tying Them Together

Like batteries, cells can be combined in series or in parallel to create larger and more specific voltages and amperages. For instance, four 1-volt/1-amp cells in series will combine for 4 volts, but the amperage will stay at 1 amp. By contrast, four 1-volt/1-amp cells in parallel will maintain 1 volt but have 4 amps of output. You can multiply the amperage by the wattage (in the example above 4 x 1) to get the watts generated. A watt is a measure of energy (think of a 40-watt light bulb).

Sizes and Shapes

Modules can be made in a many sizes and shapes to fit their application. Panels come in standard rectangular, triangular, foldable, and even thin-film rolls. This means they can be used in a wide variety of applications, from boats and rv's to electric cars and space stations.

The Solar Array

Modules are combined to create solar arrays. An array is a group of modules assembled together and designed to meet a certain electrical load. You've probably seen most arrays mounted on the rooftops of homes. These arrays are designed to generate a certain amount of electricity over the course of a year.

Efficiencies

Generally solar modules convert about 10-15% of the energy that strikes them into electricity. This means that for every 100 units of energy that actually hit the panel, only 15 of them actually enter the home as electricity. This is the biggest area of research now, as scientists recognize that significant advancements in solar efficiency will lead to cheaper solar energy.

AC vs DC

Panels generate direct current (DC) electricity. Think of a garden hose that is simply turned on produces water in a steady stream. Most household electronics and the electrical power grid are designed to take alternating current (AC) power. Now imagine that the water of coming out of the garden hose is being turned off and on so quickly that it has a "pulse". This is done because AC power travels over long distances much more efficiently.

This means however, that the electricity coming out of the solar array must be converted to AC if it is going into your home. This is done with an inverter, which takes the DC power and makes AC power. The power is then ready to service your home, an electrical grid, or a device. Some devices (certain lights, batteries, special devices) use DC power and therefore do not need an inverter.

Imagery Intelligence A Foundation of 21st Century Intelligence

Today’s intelligence professionals must be familiar with imagery intelligence or IMINT. In fact, a congressional report called it a “mainstay” of the modern intelligence community. In other words, those looking to secure a position in intelligence should be knowledgeable about this important component of intelligence data.

What is Imagery Intelligence?

Imagery intelligence is the collection of intelligence through the analysis of aerial photography and images collected through satellites. IMINT has history dating even before the Civil War, when hot air balloons were used to get a “birds-eye” view of the enemy. With the advent of photography and airplanes, IMINT evolved into the analysis of aerial photography. This type of intelligence gathering was employed often in the last century; one specific case is the use of zeppelins in World War II to gather intelligence on enemy forces.

In the 21st century, however, technological advances, such as satellites, have taken imagery intelligence to a whole new echelon. Even the average computer user has access to Google Earth, which allows them to zoom in on most areas on earth down to even street level. This is an amazing advancement, however, it inundates the intelligence community with more information than it can handle. The above-mentioned report even stated that “Given present trends, the number of images collected will continue to outpace our ability to analyze them.”

This illustrates the incredible need the intelligence community has for professionals who are trained in IMINT and also that those who are will have a stable career ahead of them.

How is IMINT used?

Among other areas, imagery intelligence is extremely important to military and intelligence operations. It allows those who plan the operations to see the environment and terrain that they will be infiltrating. IMINT is consulted regularly in order of battle (OOB) analysis, battle damage assessments, and assessments on enemy courses of action.

Imagery intelligence is an important aspect of geospatial intelligence, or GEOINT, which looks at imagery, IMINT, and geospatial information to describe and make visual representation of physical features for use in military and intelligence operations. The National Geospatial Intelligence agency, or NGA, functions as a support agency to the U.S. Department of Defense and provides important information that is used in military operations as well as disaster relief and adding safety features to maritime navigation.

IMINT is also used to support or prove inaccurate other types of intelligence, such as signals intelligence (SIGNET) or human intelligence (HUMINT). Other purposes of imagery intelligence include the monitoring of global activity for national security, providing context to more complex intelligence data, and helping with the formation of national strategy and defense policy.

Imaginary Intelligence Training

Someone who would like to enter the imagery intelligence field should have strong geography skills, as well as math skills and advanced English skills. Written and verbal communication abilities are important because IMINT professionals often have to write reports or give briefings on the imagery information they have analyzed.

It is also very useful for an individual who wants to pursue an IMINT career to have a firm understanding of the intelligence collection management process, which is the management and organization of intelligence data. Since there is so much imagery information out there, it is important to be able to analyze, organize, prioritize and disseminate imagery intelligence to the appropriate departments or agencies.

Those who do have intelligence training and these important skills will definitely be competitive candidates for careers at the NGA or other intelligence agencies. There are also many opportunities for military careers and promotions in imagery intelligence for those who have the right skills and education.

The Newest Work Hazard For Computer Users: CVS

Millions of Americans go to work every day to sit at a computer for 8 or more hours, seven days a week. While office work is hardly considered to be a "dangerous" job, several years ago, doctors began to notice that certain afflictions are becoming increasingly common among those who use computers all day long.

First, the medical community became aware of CTS (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome), a painful and sometimes debilitating inflammation in the wrist, arms, and hands. In response to the increased number of office workers being diagnosed with CTS, computer furniture manufacturers began to develop ergonomically correct keyboards and keyboard trays, as well as computer chairs that offer more comfortable seating for computer use. Now, many employers provide ergonomically correct workstations for their office staff and CTS is on the decline.

Unfortunately, a new hazard has now taken the place of CTS. It's called CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome), and is caused by prolonged visual exposure to a computer screen. CVS has, in the past two years, become the number one health complaint of office employees.

Like CTS, Computer Vision Syndrome is also preventable. There are a few things you can do to reduce the sensitivity and eye strain associated with computer work. According to optometrist Dr. Larry K. Wan, there are five key ways to reduce the effects of CVS.

Dr. Wan suggests getting regular eye exams, which means (according to NIOSH—the National Institute of Occupational safety and Health) once a year. While many contact-lens wearers are required to get eye exams each year to renew their lens prescription, it's important for those who don't wear contacts as well. Tracking the health of your eyes will allow your optometrist to identify whether or not you're experiencing a deterioration of vision due to CVS.

Dr. Wan also contends that proper lighting is important, citing that eyestrain can be caused by excessive lighting either coming in through a window, or from interior lighting itself. Dim your lights when using a computer.

Glare is another factor that Dr. Wan claims can cause CVS. In addition to adding an anti-reflective coating to your eyeglasses, glare can be prevented by anti-glare screens attached to your monitor, or by using an LCD monitor arm. LCD monitor arms actually allow you to tilt or slide your monitor at the touch of a finger, eliminating strain as the light in the room changes. We found affordable, high-quality LCD monitors online at Versa Products, Inc.

Adjusting the brightness of your computer screen can also help. Optimize for comfort which may mean either reducing or increasing the brightness. Find one that feels comfortable to your eyes.

Interestingly, Dr. Wan also tells his patients to blink more often. When staring at a computer screen, we tend to blink less than we normally do—a process which keeps the eyes lubricated and comfortable. Make a point of blinking more often and every half hour, blink about ten times in a row, slowly. This will help reduce the effects of CVS as well.

Preventive Measures in Electricity Shock

The main hazards associated with electricity are fire and electrical shock. Electrical shock appears when the body becomes portion of the electric circuit, either when everyone comes in contact with the wires of an electrical circuit, two wires of an energized circuit and the ground, or a metallic portion that has become energized by connecting with an electrical conductor.

The effects and severity of an electrical shock rely on a number of considerations, such as the pathway by the way of the body, the quantity of current, the time length of the exposure, and whether the skin is dry or wet. Water is a good conductor of electricity, supporting current to flow more freely in wet conditions and by the way of wet skin. The result of the shock may categorize from a slight tingle to severe cardiac arrest.

Electrical Hazard Preventions

There are many ways of protecting individual from the hazards provoke by electricity, including guarding, grounding, insulation, and electrical devices. Workers can importantly reduce electrical hazards by following some precautions:

• Check the wiring equipment every time you use. Replace Frayed electrical or damaged cords immediately.

• Use safe work practices each time electrical supplies is used.

• Remember the location and how to perform shut-off switches or circuit breaker panels. Operate these devices to turn off equipment in case of fire or electrocution.

• Limit the usage of extension cords. Use only for limited operations. In all other cases, request set-up of a new electrical outlet.

• Use multi-plug adapters with fuses or circuit breakers.

• Minimize the potential for chemical spills or water on a near electrical supplies.

Safe Work Practices

The following work practices may lessen risk of injury or fire when working with electrical accessories or equipments:

• Avoid touching with energized electrical circuits.

• Detach the power source before repairing or servicing electrical equipment.

• If it is important to handle equipment that has electrical circuits connections, be certain that the hands are dry and, if possible, wear nonconductive gloves and shoes with protective soles.

• If it is unsafe to do so, work with one hand, keeping the other hand in your pocket or at your side, away from conductive material. This precaution lessens the likelihood of accidents that effect in current passing via the chest cavity.

• Reduce the use of electrical equipment in a cold room or other areas where condensation is similar. If accessories must be used in certain areas, mount the equipment on vertical panel or on a wall.

• If a chemical or water is spilled onto equipments, shut off power at the circuit breaker or main switch and unplug the outlet.

If any person comes in contact with a live conductor, never touch the cord or equipment, person. Disconnect the power source immediately from the circuit breaker or pull out the plug through a leather belt.

Be safe when it comes to electricity. If we follow these procedures it is considered very effective. Visit our website to know more about safety tips in electricity http://currentcost.net/. We will share our ideas safety installations.

Stress In The Workplace

According to the Australian Council of Trade Unions’ (A.C.T.U.) 1997 survey, fifty per cent of workers had suffered some form of stress at work in a 12-month period. The statistics in care professions were even higher, with the Department of Education and Training in Western Australia reporting in its 2002 Attitudes To Teaching Survey that seventy per cent of teachers identified workplace stress as a cause for concern in their teaching positions.

Stress in the workplace is becoming a major concern for employers, managers and government agencies, owing to the Occupational Health and safety legislations requiring employers to practice ‘duty of care’ by providing employees with safe working environments which also cover the psychological wellbeing of their staff.

One of the costs, for employers, of work place stress is absenteeism, with the A.C.T.U. reporting that owing to stress, nearly fifty per cent of employees surveyed had taken time off work. Other negative effects were reductions in productivity, reduced profits, accidents, high rates of sickness, increased workers’ compensation claims and high staff turnover, requiring recruiting and training of replacement staff.

While a certain amount of stress is needed to motivate individuals into action, prolonged stress can have a huge impact on overall health. More than two-thirds of visits to doctors’ surgeries are for stress-related illnesses. Stress has been linked to headaches, backaches, insomnia, anger, cramps, elevated blood pressure, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and lowered resistance to infection. For women, stress is a key factor in hormonal imbalances resulting in menstrual irregularities, PMS, fibroids, endometriosis and fertility problems. Stress can also be a factor in the development of almost all disease states including cancer and heart disease.

Each profession has its own unique factors that may cause stress; below are some causes of stress that cross many professions:

  • Increased workload
  • Organizational changes
  • Lack of recognition
  • High demands
  • Lack of support
  • Personal and family issues
  • Poor work organization
  • Lack of training
  • Long or difficult hours
  • Inadequate staff numbers and resources
  • Poor management communication
  • Lack of control or input

So what can be done to effectively manage workplace stress?

Organizations can:

  • Educate their employees to recognise the signs of stress.
  • Where possible, give their employees the chance to be involved in decisions and actions that affect their jobs.
  • Improve employer-employee communications.
  • Provide employees with opportunities to socialise together.
  • Be understanding of employees’ personal and family responsibilities.
  • Ensure employee workloads suit their capabilities and resources (provide more training and resources if not).
  • Provide support (internally or externally) for employees who have complex stress issues.

Employees can reduce their overall stress by:

  • Regularly exercising, as this releases ‘happy hormones’.
  • Eating a healthy diet, as stress depletes vital nutrients.
  • Getting adequate rest.
  • Using tea and lunch breaks to read, listen to a relaxation CD or have a five-minute power-nap.
  • If appropriate, playing relaxing music at work and burning aromatherapy oils.
  • Being more organized. Get up earlier to have more time.
  • Delegating responsibility where possible. Say no!
  • Taking time out to laugh by telling someone a joke. Start a laughter group: by standing in a circle and all forcing a big laugh, it will soon become real!
  • Avoiding caffeine and sugar. Although this may provide an instant lift it later depletes the body of energy and nutrients.
  • Taking time to do things that bring enjoyment and pleasure.
  • Making the work environment pleasurable. Have relaxing sounds in the form of music or a water fountain. Have enjoyable smells by burning candles or aromatherapy oils. Hang beautiful pictures or posters on the walls; have photos or flowers on the desk.
  • Taking care of their overall health and wellbeing by practising good self-care.

Sometimes trying to implement change (even for the better) can itself cause stress and prevent a person remaining motivated. In this case it’s important to get support for your stress from a counsellor, doctor, naturopath, friend, peer or life coach who specializes in stress issues.

The benefits of a systematic and joint approach to reducing work stress are:

  • Increased productivity
  • Decrease in absenteeism
  • Improved morale
  • Decrease in workers’ compensation claims
  • Reduction in workplace accidents

The most important benefit in reducing workplace stress is that it will promote a pleasant work environment for all.
