Solar Attic Fans - Do They Actually Work?

We all know that our energy consumption has a huge impact on the environment (yay-yah-yah).

We all also know that we ought to be doing whatever we can to reduce green house gases. But it sometimes takes a little bit of effort and this effort can be a tad inconvenient. Yes?

Yes. Absolutely. Glad we agree. Thank you.

The question is, are solar attic fans worth the cost? Are they worth the price of shipping AND installation cost?

Maybe.

It depends on you and your motivation to "save the planet". Perhaps you will feel less guilty knowing you are "doing your part" to be a conscientiously environmental person. Will that make you feel better?

The fact is, the planet is not in danger: WE ARE. Here's why: The planet has been through billions of years of asteroid bombardments, the extinction of countless life forms, major transformations over and over again. (the list goes on). Thus, the planet earth has proved itself and it is not going to disappear anytime soon. But humans may, and it may be sooner than we would like to acknowledge while we drink our fancy coffees in the morning sitting comfortably in our modern air-conditioned, well heated homes - with our automatic dish-washers and big-screen entertainment units.

Anyway, is it worth the effort and cost to implement solar attic fans to your roof to drastically reduce attic ventilation costs and reduce green house gases? That is the question.

Here's the good news: solar attic fans, or attic solar fans not only "save the earth" but they can also save you money as well.

How?

Well, if your house is very hot during the summer, especially in the upper bedroom floors, it is almost assured that the reason for the extra hotness is directly related to poor attic or roof ventilation, or roof or attic insulation. A solar attic fan can easily stop this from happening.

If you are not interested in taking the time, cost, or effort to have an solar attic fan installed to your home, that may be a good decision because other alternative are available such as baffled ridge vent roof ventilation. If you ARE interested, here are some excellent pointers to help you get on the right track when deciding on a solar attic fan.

Many attic solar fans (or roof solar fans) are available. Most are basic and really do not cover the cost and most are quite poor at absorbing the sun's power. Another extremely important point is to NOT NEED a solar attic fan because there are very amazing wind-driven fans that are much more effective depending on the design of your roof.

When do you REALLY need an solar attic fan?

You only truly need a solar attic fan when the design of your roof is very high-sloped, or with not much ridge area. Why? Because the higher the pitch or slope of a roof, the more difficult is is for fresh air to move up and outwards. If your roof is low-sloped, you may not need a solar attic fan.

In conclusion: Contact a professional roof insulation, attic ventilation expert and be sure that your attic is thoroughly inspected BEFORE buying any solar attic fan.

Rick Woolsey is an expert advisor for solar attic fans and is the owner of Roof Insulation Protection (RIP) located in Toronto, Canada.

Vermiculture: Indoor Composting and Organic Soil Improvement

Maybe you’ve never heard the term vermiculture, if so don’t feel bad, many experienced gardeners are unfamiliar with this organic practice. I think vermiculture is fascinating; simply put it’s the process of composting kitchen waste with earthworms. We’re not talking about common night crawlers, but special varieties of worms such as red worms, and red wigglers.

Okay, I’ll admit to owning an ant farm when I was a kid, but this is so much more practical. Vermiculture, or vermicomposting as its also known is more like beekeeping; yes I’ve given that a try too. But just imagine for a second, you feed the worms your leftover garbage and kitchen scraps. The worms then quickly eat all those leftovers, sparing you the hassles of taking out the garbage.

And here’s the best part, while the composting worms are disposing of your garbage, they’re also producing a terrific organic fertilizer and soil conditioner called earthworm castings. Well, okayÂ… the term earthworm casting is just a nice name for earthworm excrement. I don’t know who thought up the name earthworm castings, but I guess it makes sense if you think it through.

You may have seen worm castings for sale at your local garden center and didn’t realize what you were dealing with, but now you know. Don’t worry, earthworm castings are clean, odorless, and sterileÂ… trust me on this one. You don’t need gloves or a shovel to handle them, and they are wonderful for improving your soil quality and for promoting the growth and health of all your plants.

So you can purchase bags of earthworm castings to use around the garden or if you’re a little more adventurous you can set up an “earthworm farm” and produce your own. The farm is actually just a worm bin that can be set up indoors or outdoors depending on the climate.

Vermicomposting isn’t complicated, but the worms are living creatures, and have certain requirements. For example they don’t tolerate extremely hot living conditions, and they also won’t survive freezing. The worms are pretty healthy eaters, so while eggshells are fine, don’t try slipping any meat, fats, or greasy foods into their diet.

If this sounds a little like having a pet, well it is. Not terribly demanding, but they do require a little of your attention to make sure that things run smoothly. In exchange they’ll be hard at work performing their community service to save the environment and to help you grow a better garden.

Kids love vermicomposting and some schools even include vermiculture as part of the curriculum. For those of you wishing that they had grown up with a worm bin instead of that ant farm, it’s not too late to try one out. You can find plans for building homemade bins or you can purchase fancy multi-level bins over the Internet. And unlike those ant farms, you can have these bins delivered complete with the composting worms.

If you’re up for the challenge and interested in recycling your family’s kitchen waste into a valuable fertilizer and soil conditioner, try your hand at vermiculture. During long winters, it may even help to pass the time until you can get back out into the garden.

Car Safety

When automobiles first came out, the only car safety feature they had was a brake. No safety glass, no seat belts, no air bags. Driving back then was a sure-fire hazard that could get you killed. Thankfully, those times are over.

Car safety has improved dramatically over the years. Since the invention of the automobile, safety has been an issue. It is no joke, that the early originators of the car industry would be stunned at all the features now available on our automobiles. The gas-powered engine has altered our society into one of greater mobility. We can now travel to destinations that would have taken months to get to only a century ago. Much of that change is due to car safety measures.

New technologies have made automobiles faster, and with increased speed, comes increased accidents. Because of lawsuits and just bad press, automobile manufacturers became more concerned with improving car safety and preventing injuries and deaths. Because of this concern, car safety has been greatly improved, saving countless lives.

However, vehicle accidents continue to happen, often with devastating results. Car safety devices such as seat belts are commonplace today, but they are not always used. In fact, it wasn’t until the legislative bodies in many states addressed this issue of car safety and made seat belt use a law that their use became more the rule than the exception. Drivers in these states must buckle up, or they will be fined. In an effort to improve car safety, and to lessen the amount of tickets handed out, some vehicle manufacturers designed seat belts that would automatically secure the passenger.

Car safety should be everyone’s concern. Not every accident can be prevented, but we can make wiser choices by choosing a safer automobile for ourselves and our families. But even that isn’t enough. We must then use the restraint systems while we are driving. Newer vehicles have air bags, which require us to do nothing in order to benefit from this added car safety feature. In addition, side air bags are also available on some models. The actual bodies of the cars, side panels, as well as front and rear panels, are now designed for greater impact protection should we be in crash.

If you are shopping for a car, you can get insightful and honest information on vehicle safety ratings by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at www.nhtsa.dot.gov. Crash test and rollover test ratings are available for review on most passenger cars, pick up trucks, SUVs, and vans from 1990 onward. Car safety ratings can be compared quite easily. This is a very good site to visit and can assist consumers in making an informed decision based on a car’s safety ratings.

The next time you get into your car, remember that car safety is a choice. A choice that can save your life and the lives of others.

Dangers Of Electric Shocks For Toddlers

Generally children are at little risk from getting an electric shock these days. Electrical appliances are the main danger around then home.

You can make you home even safer for your children by following these simple rules.

Just installing items like Baby safety Gates does not solve all of the problems around your home.

With regard to electrical appliances you can often tell if they are faulty just by looking at them. Inspect them regularly for frayed cables and wires, they can become frayed over time due to normal use. If the cable is damaged then this will present a hazard to your child as children tend to be on the floor crawling around during their everyday activities. Whilst you are checking the cables, have a look at the socket outlets to see if there is any sign of burning check to see if they work properly. If one side of a double socket works and the other does not then get it changed as there is clearly a fault.

Overloading sockets is another practice to avoid, especially taking extension leads off extension leads, doing this will certainly overload any sockets, and may cause a fire due to the high resistance in the cable due to its length. So avoid this at all costs. Also to be avoided are the multi-way plug adapters as they too can quickly overload a circuit if used for heating appliances etc.

Sockets are also favourite places for children to poke things into, sockets are designed not to have things pushed into them other than plugs, but to be safe fit socket covers to those empty sockets that are accessible to your child, fitting these devices will stop anything being push into them. If you child does push something metal into the socket tubes they stand a very good chance of getting an electric shock.

With regard to electrical equipment make sure that your child is unable to plug them in by themselves as they risk being injured by the equipment itself. Hair straighteners or hair dryers and irons can cause burning if they are touched. Turn off any appliances that are not designed to be left on, fridges are designed to be left on phone chargers and curling tongs are not. If you are unsure about any appliances in your home then do not use it. You can pay to have them checked out, if it is an expensive piece of equipment you can have a PAT (Portable Appliance Test) done on them which will let you know it is safe to use. If you need to find a PAT tester then look under portable appliance testing in the yellow pages.

Check that heating appliances are mounted correctly and check that they are not too close to walls or curtains. If you have a toddler it would be wise to ensure that they are unable to touch the heater or even get hold of the electrical chord in case they pull it down on top of themselves.

Remember water and electricity does not mix, ensure that when you feed your child or have then drink be sure that they cannot drop the liquid on any plug sockets or any equipment. Purchasing Baby safety Products can help reduce any risks in your home.

Having your electric checked on a regular basis will help to ensure that your home is electrically safe. When having the circuits checked by a qualified electrician such as an NICEIC registered company, you will get a full report of the electrical installation when it’s completed. They will highlight to you any issued that present itself. If your property has the old pull out fuses (BS 3036) they will recommend that you have it changed for a more modern unit that offers some degree of supplementary protect against electric shock. The new consumer unit will be fitted with an RCD protective device. They save lives every year.

Paul is an NICEIC registered electrician with a business in the west midlands and has years of experience testing and inspecting businesses and homes alike. He finds that Baby Safety Products can help make your home safer. The World of Babies stocks a complete range for parents.

Seven Tips for Fire Safety

It’s easy to think a house fire won’t happen to you. But don’t be fooled—house fires are more common than you’d think. All it takes is a spark, a flammable substance, and some oxygen to cause a tragedy. Don’t let yourself be caught unprepared—follow these safety tips to prevent fires in your home, and get out safely if one occurs.

Keep your fire alarms in working order. Make sure you have working fire alarms on every floor of the house—especially the kitchen and near your bedroom. You should change the batteries twice a year. Don’t ever turn off or remove your fire alarms for any reason. People most often do this when they’re cooking and creating a lot of smoke—that fire alarm can get annoying when it keeps going off while you’re trying to cook. Don’t smash the alarm with a broom handle, tempting as it is—don’t even turn it off. It’s easy to forget to turn it back on. Instead, open the windows and turn on the kitchen fan before you start cooking. It’s also best not to trust that your fire alarms work, even if they have fresh batteries—test them by lighting a match underneath.

Have a just-in-case plan. Make sure your kids know what to do if the fire alarm goes off. They should hold hands and stay together, and one parent should be in charge of leading them out to a safe place. They should know how to get in formation and follow orders, even when half asleep. They should understand that they cannot be allowed to stop to find their favorite toy or pet. Pick a prominent place safely away from the house—under a certain tree, by the swing-set, or at the end of the driveway, for example—where the family will meet in case of a fire alarm. You should keep a strong flashlight by your bed in case your power fails, as it often will during a fire. Rehearse your escape plan several times a year.

Know how to get out. If you’re upstairs and the fire gets to your stairway before you do, you could be in serious trouble—if you don’t have an escape plan. Be sure all your windows open easily, and keep some escape ladders in your upper floors. Make sure both spouses and older children know how to unfold, safely attach, and use the ladders. Practice escaping from any upper floors of the house a few times a year.

Keep fire extinguishers in the house. Most guides will suggest that you have one on each floor in your house, especially in the kitchen and in the basement near the furnace and water heater. Be sure that all your fire extinguishers will work for wood, chemical, and electrical fires—not all brands do. Make sure both spouses and all older children know how to use the fire extinguishers.

Remove obvious fuels. Keep dry leaves and other detritus at least thirty feet away from your home—they are very flammable. If you have a fireplace or wood stove, store the wood in a wood shed at least thirty feet from your house. If you have a wood shop, make sure sawdust is not allowed to build up—it’s extremely flammable and can ignite with enough force to blow a hole through a wall!

Get a fireproof safe. It’s extremely important never to run back into a burning building, for any reason—it could be a death sentence. If there’s something you really don’t want to lose—valuable documents or jewelry, for example—buy a fireproof safe or cabinet to keep it in. That way, you won’t worry about leaving something important inside the house, and you won’t be tempted to run back in—especially if the fire doesn’t look that bad yet. Even if it doesn’t look that bad, it can still kill you. Keeping your most important belongings in a fireproof safe or cabinet could save your life.

Do a routine fire safety check. There are a lot of little things you can do to lessen your risk of a fire. Never leave a candle burning when you leave a room. Check your electrical wires and extension cords for signs of wear—and never let them lie under rugs or furniture. Never leave anything that could catch fire near a heat source, like an oven, a radiator, or a portable heater. Regularly clean the lint from your dryer’s lint trap and tubing. Empty ashes from fireplaces, wood stoves, and ashtrays into a metal container, not a plastic garbage bin. Never smoke in bed.

You can protect yourself from fires just by making a few safety checks part of your routine, and being aware of fire safety in the home. Don’t be caught unawares—check in with your local fire station for their advice on how to fireproof your home, and follow these simple tips to make sure a fire never happens to you.

National Origin Discrimination, Labor Law, and Employment Law in Hawaii: Employers Increasingly Facing Litigation over English-Only Rules as More Complaints are Filed with the EEOC

National Origin Discrimination, Labor Law, and Employment Law in Hawaii: Employers Increasingly Facing Litigation over English-Only Rules as More Complaints are Filed with the EEOC

Title VII prohibits discrimination because of “national origin.” The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the agency charged with the enforcement of Title VII, defines national origin discrimination as the denial of equal employment opportunity because of an individual’s ancestry, place of origin, or because the individual possesses the physical, cultural, or linguistic characteristics of a national origin group.

The EEOC has consistently scrutinized English-Only policies very closely and has taken the position that such policies can be a proxy for national origin discrimination.

Given the amount of attention given to immigration issues on a national scale, the significant increase in national origin claims being filed with the EEOC in the last few years is no surprise. Many of these claims arise from employers promulgating English-Only policies. In the EEOC’s view only the most limited policies do not violate Title VII.

Recently, the EEOC brought suit against a California Nursing Home company that prohibited Spanish-speaking employees from speaking Spanish to Spanish-speaking residents, and also while on breaks or in the parking lot of the facilities.

According to the EEOC, in addition to being required to comply with an overbroad English-Only policy that the employer did not apply even-handedly, it was alleged that Hispanic employees were given desirable work than non-Hispanic counterparts, were paid less, and promoted less often. In April 2009 the EEOC and the company settled for $450,000.

Hawaii employers are also finding it difficult to balance legitimate business needs and Hawaii employment practices law prohibiting ancestry or national origin discrimination. Hawaii law, HRS Chapter 378, prohibits discriminating against an employee in the terms or conditions of employment, because of their “ancestry.” However, as a practical matter “ancestry” and “national origin” are synonymous under Hawaii law.

Hawaii law is arguably more expansive than Title VII in that employers are precluded from making pre-employment inquiries and requests for information which tend to lead to disclosure of the person’s ancestry/national origin, unless the inquiry is justified by a bona fide occupational qualification.

Both the EEOC and the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission (“HCRC”) have issued regulations addressing the issue of English-Only rules and whether and to what extent employers prohibiting foreign languages to be spoken in the workplace have violated the prohibition against national origin discrimination.

The EEOC and HCRC’s regulations presume that blanket English-Only rules are per se unlawful. Their position also is that limited English-Only policies are lawful only if justified by business necessity. 2002 EEOC guidelines list the following examples where business necessity justifies an English-Only policy:

• For communications with customers, coworkers, or supervisors who speak only English;

• in emergencies or other situations where workers must speak a common language to promote safety;

• for cooperative work assignments in which the English-Only rule is needed to promote efficiency;

• to enable a supervisor who only speaks English to monitor the performance of an employee whose job duties require communication with coworkers or customers.

Employers with English-Only rules should also consider doing the following:

• Implement cultural sensitivity training programs for supervisors;

• provide non-native English-speaking employees English classes;

• ensure to the extent possible an even-handed application of the rule;

• draft or revise the English-Only rule as narrowly as possible;

• give employees fair notice of the rule and consequences for violating the policy;

• have the policy written in other languages spoken in the workplace.

How Cubicle Designs Affect Employee Productivity and Performance

Today's jobs are highly stressful with constant pressure to meet deadlines to satisfy customers and to come up with solutions for unexpected problems. Office organization and design is directly linked to employee productivity and performance. Lately, companies, manufacturers and architects alike are paying more and more attention to health, safety and comfort issues.

The concept of a typical office loaded with cubicles is changing at a very fast pace. You cannot place people in small workstations and expect them to perform well and be productive. You cannot confine people to little cubicles and expect them to spend 1/3 of their day staring at the computer screen and be creative.

Cubicles are revolutionary inventions; nevertheless the way cubicles are designed is critical to employee productivity and performance. The concept of "open office" borrowed from Europe in the 1950s revolutionized the nature of the work environment and created a transparent, democratic, and egalitarian work look and feel where employees were "connected." A more interactive and collaborative workplace fosters improved performance. The best ideas are nurtured when there's a feeling of community and solidarity, where employees can easily interact with each other and toss suggestions around. The need for a workspace that promotes team spirit is crucial.

The open-plan office, filled with cubicles, was revolutionary but concerns about privacy and ambient noise led companies to rethink the office cubicle design. This open-plan model where a large open room was filled with small cubicles was a nightmare for employees. It became a nightmare for employers too as they were losing valuable workforce strength. A great number of companies realized that the balance between privacy and community is critical. They began searching for new designs that could provide a more egalitarian and cost-efficient work environment without sacrificing privacy and comfort; that is, a private work space, yet highly engaging.

Today office cubicle design places the individual at the center. Office cubicles are designed to promote better performance and productivity in the workplace.

Thanks to its growing commitment to R&D, MAiSPACE is constantly searching for innovative office cubicle design to help you boost your company's performance. Its office cubicle furniture products are elegant, sleek, stylish, and functional. MAiSPACE develops new ways to increase productivity at work with its revolutionary products such as ergonomic and smart office chairs, folding conference tables, high-tech office cubicles with individual temperature controls and piped in music. Removable, reconfigurable office cubicle furniture products simplify moving elements into and throughout the building reducing installation costs. It can also reduce the number of framing components required. The workstations can be easily taken apart and then re-assembled.

Office cubicle systems are meant to be comfortable, functional, and efficient. It's all about space planning and utilization, efficiency and human comfort. The principal idea is to layer storage (full wall storage shelves) and to leverage the vertical space. Yes there might be some truth that creativity might flourish in disorder, but you can't be surrounded by clutter at work. Your desk at home could look like a crime scene, but at work some organization is certainly needed. A neat desk definitely saves time you would otherwise spend looking for things, allows your co-workers to find things in your office and as importantly it creates a more professional environment.

Your files do not need to be color-coded, but some organization is certainly required to project a professional look. A neat infrastructure over which you can place your files, folders and papers is what you need. At MAiSPACE, we have developed custom office cubicle furniture with smaller desks, so sitting arrangements can be worked-in. Tables, which could replace desks, and versatile book shelves which can become filing cabinets with crates and decorative boxes when required are additional examples of flexible components providing flexible configurations. When space is limited, there are imaginative alternatives that can serve dual purposes. MAiSPACE helps you take advantage of every inch of space in your workspace in an efficient and economical way.

MAiSPACE offers you a variety of ways to reconfigure your office space. We are as concerned as you are about your productivity, performance and profitability.

The office furniture market is highly competitive, and MAiSPACE leads the way with record growth in sales and profits; this can only be attributed to leading edge product design and innovation. As new technology is developed, the furniture industry needs to make adjustments too. MAiSPACE is continually working on new and innovative designs to accommodate technological advances. MAiSPACE's new, modestly priced product line, MORSPACE, was a great success when it was introduced in 1997. MOrSPACE has taken cost effective systems to the next level. MOrSPACE is still the office furniture industry's most affordable frame and tile system. No contract furniture manufacturer can match our quality at our price points. It's that simple.

MAiSPACE.com will help business owners and operators make smart choices in Ergonomic Office Furniture and Modern Office Furniture for their offices and selecting the right Office Cubicles.

Child Safety, Tips for Protecting your Children!

It has been said that children are our most valuable resource. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that we take positive measures to insure their safety and prevent them from becoming victims of crime.

Parents...

Never leave children alone; not at home, in a vehicle, at play, or anywhere.

Define what a STRANGER is. Let your kids know that just because they see someone everyday (e.g. mailman, paperboy, neighbor, etc.) it does not mean these people are not strangers.

Teach your children their full name, your name, full address, and phone number, including area codes. Teach them how to use a phone.

Teach your children the "What if...?" Game, making up different dangerous situations that they might encounter and helping them play out what they would do in that situation.

Take the time to talk to your children and be alert to any noticeable changes in their behavior or attitude toward an adult or teenager; it may be a sign of sexual abuse.

Set up procedures with your child's school or day care center as to whom the child will be released to other than yourself, and what notification procedure they are to follow if the child does not show up on time.

Teach your children that their body is private and no one has the right to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable. If anyone touches them in a wrong way they should: SAY NO, GET AWAY, and TELL SOMEONE they trust.

Please visit my website http://www.self-defense101.com for some neat child safety products.
